Abstract (EN): Although automated rule-checking is often presented in the context of applying for licenses and permits, as a way to assess compliance with building codes, its most immediate application can be found in earlier stages of the design phase. The impact of design options on the performance of buildings in several domains can be assessed automatically using BIM tools. In this article, we discuss the advantages and challenges of adopting automated rule-checking procedure as a tool for design development and present examples of software solutions that can be used for this purpose.
