Details
Summary: Solar energy can be stored in chemical fuels, such as hydrogen, but the
photoelectrosynthesis of these fuels require high overpotentials and complex storage systems. SunFlow aims at low cost and efficient direct conversion of solar power into readily utilized electrochemical energy, in a disruptive approach for dispatchable solar energy. A solar redox flow battery (SRFB) integrates a photoelectrochemical (PEC) panel with a redox flow batteries (RFB). Benefiting from fast redox couples and semiconductor/electrolyte interface tunability, SRFB allows efficient, environmentally safe and cheap devices, displaying >80 % round-trip efficiency, meeting the requirements for nearly-zero energy buildings and taking advantage of already existing infrastructures. SunFlow proposes the development and optimization of SRFBs with high-energy conversion efficiency photoelectrodes and suitable redox pairs aiming at >10 mA·cm-2, >1 V and >500 h of stability, based on Ta3N5 photoelectrode.
