Summary: SunStorage project aims at to study and develop technologies for converting solar energy into chemical and
electrochemical energies and its storage. It aims at the development, characterization and optimization of single and
tandem photoelectrodes (PE/PV) and the corresponding photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices for:
1) solar charging redox flow batteries (RFB), including harvesting and use of thermal energy (cogeneration) and;
2) solar photoelectroreduction of carbon dioxide to CO and MeOH where H2 or H2O are feed to the anode.
SunStorage proposes incremental and disruptive innovations. Among the disruptive innovations are:
1) Direct solar charging of a RFB;
2) Glass sealed, very efficient tandem photoelectrodes (4 mA/cm2 and 1.5 V);
3) Melting sealed, compact and efficient stack for use in RFB;
4) IL(ionic liquid) based 3D electrodes for the electroreduction of CO2;
5) Vanadium-based IL as redox pairs in a RFB; allows storing one order of magnitude more energy than the
conventional systems.
SunStorage envisages fundamental and applied research in the mentioned areas, targeting socio-economically
valuable solutions. In particular, the RFB prototype should result in IP transfer, and the PEC cells for charging RFBs
and for the electroreduction of CO2 should result in agreements with companies for commercial implementation.
Companies such as Fre3nergy (DK) (this last foreseen to build in Portugal a RFB plant in the year 2016/2017),
InnovCat (PT), Ynvisible (PT) and OMNIDEA (PT) already demonstrated their interest in the project.
