Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), Portugal. BSc in Biochemistry, University of Coimbra, 1992. PhD in Chemistry, University of Coimbra, Portugal, 1998. PhD in Physical Chemistry in Lund University, Sweden, 2000. Habilitation (Agregação) in Chemistry at UPorto in 2018.

At UPorto, teaches courses in physical chemistry, colloids and interfaces, thermodynamics, materials chemistry, general chemistry, biological chemistry and scientific writing. Director of the Masters in Chemistry (FCUP) and local coordinator of Erasmus Mundus Master SERP+. Member of the scientific committee of the EUGLOH alliance of universities.

Leader of the group "Surfactants, Colloids and Soft Nanomaterials" in the RG3/CIQUP R&D unit at UPorto, with focus on the development and applications of soft nanomaterials, comprising surfactants, catanionic vesicles, polymer-surfactant systems, interfacial properies,, modified interfaces, liquid crystals, colloidal vectors for drug/gene delivery, and carbon nanomaterials/amphiphile 2D and 3D hybrids. Published > 100 ISI-indexed publications, h-index 31, 3 edited books and 7 book chapters. Supervisor of 8 PhD theses, >30 master theses and > 50 BSc theses  in Chemistry and Biochemistry and extra-curricular projects.

Visiting Professor in Dep. Chem. Eng., MIT, USA (2008), Roma Sapienza University, Italy (2007), Lund University, Sweden (2001-08), Univ. Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2011-2015) and Univ. Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan, Poland (2017-18). More than 60 invited lectures and seminars in universities in Europe, Israel and USA.

Chair of the Group of Colloids, Polymers and Interfaces of the Portuguese Chemical Society (2009-present), chair/co-chair of several international conferences (RICI4, SIS2014 and RICI6) and member of the scientific committee of several national and international conferences.

Research projects and collaborations with groups in Portugal, Sweden, Israel, Spain, France, Italy, Norway and Brazil, companies and technological centers. Evaluator of projects for FCT, CNRS, INRA, ETH-Zürich and UAM-Poznan.
