Master in Physics and Chemistry Teacher Education for Middle and Secondary Schools
The course/SC is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The Master’s in Education organised by the FCUP are second cycle, professional degrees qualifying students to teach in primary and secondary schools. This degree provides the scientific and pedagogical skills required to teach physics and chemistry in the 3rd cycle of primary and in secondary education. It harmonises the educational process with the need for teacher qualifications which have arisen as a result of changes in society and education and the evolution of science and technology. The degree guarantees careful instruction in both general and specific areas of knowledge and know-how required for quality professional training whilst it also prepares practitioners to face the novel demands of education.
Admissions Requirements
Holders of a first cycle degree (bachelor's degree, or falling under the conditions referred to in paragraphs b) to d) of article 17 of Decree-law 74/2006 in the wording of DL 65/2018), without professional qualification for teaching in the recruitment group of Physics and Chemistry (510), who have obtained in their higher education at least 30 credits in Physics, 30 credits in Chemistry, and 120 credits in both areas combined. Candidates that, at the time of admission to the cycle of studies, have at least six full years of teaching experience, with a minimum evaluation of Good, in the last 10 years in the respective scientific area. These candidates may alternatively choose supervised teaching practice by presenting and publicly defending a report of a theoretical-practical nature, scientifically supported, and that encompasses the teaching period. The requirements for drawing up this report and its assessment process are laid down by the responsible FCUP structure.
To comply with the legal requirement of oral and written proficiency in the Portuguese language and mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation, the following are accepted:
Proof of completion of a specific exam taken at FCUP or another higher education institution, even if taken in a previous academic year, demonstrating oral and written proficiency in Portuguese and mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation.
‘Transcript of grades’, duly certified by the respective secondary school, stating successful attendance and/or national examination in the subject of Portuguese in secondary school.
Nos casos em que não seja possível a apresentação de um dos documentos acima mencionados, poderá ser realizada uma prova específica nesta Faculdade. O acesso à mesma obriga à inscrição e pagamento do respetivo emolumento, conforme edital divulgado
You can also apply if you fulfil the other conditions but have achieved only 75% of the minimum credit requirements listed above, i.e. 90 credits in both scientific areas (Physics + Chemistry) and 22.5 credits in each of them. In this case, enrolment in the curricular units of the specific teaching components and introduction to professional practice, including supervised teaching practice, can take place, whenever possible, at the same time as obtaining the missing credits. It is worth emphasising that it is up to the faculty’s legally and statutorily competent structure to decide which curricular units of the necessary training components candidates must attend in order to obtain the credits required to be awarded the master's degree
Candidates who are able to complete a 1st cycle of studies by the date of their enrolment in this master's degree and comply with the previously mentioned requirements are also accepted.
Candidates who do not have a full degree at the closing date of the application period but are able to complete one prior to the enrolment deadline, must provide proof of their grade average at the time of application, as well as the curricular units missing to obtain the degree.
Note:Serão excluídos todos os candidatos que não comprovem ter concluído a licenciatura (ou equivalente) até ao final do prazo de realização da matrícula
Criteria for Selection and Ranking
The ranking of candidates will be based on the following criteria:
75% Average of the Bachelor's Degree for candidates who do not hold a bachelor's degree at the date of application, but are able to complete it by the date of enrolment in the cycle of studies, and who meet the admission requirements, the bachelor's degree average is affected by a factor equal to the ratio between the ECTS in which they have already been approved and the total number of ECTS of the bachelor's degree.
25%: Curriculum Vitae
Candidate tie-breaker criteria:
Hold a master's degree in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Education, or related fields.
