Master in Geospatial Engineering

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

Meet the Master

Geographic Engineering prepares students for the study, measure and representation of the Earth whether with traditional mapping methods or by way of digital geographical information. It examines the techniques for observing and measuring the Earth with the aim of acquiring positional and qualitative information about the globe’s surface. It utilises methods both earthbound and spatial for data gathering, especially satellites observing the Earth for positioning and navigation. The field currently serves as support for numerous other disciplines, namely environmental studies and planning.
This degree imparts academic training and practice required for understanding issues of the gathering and treatment a wide range of geographic data, including: the production of topographic maps, the implementation and supervision of geodetic positioning investigation, the treatment of images from satellites and aerial photography; and the implementation and management of geographic information systems. The training seeks to provide extensive knowledge of the various disciplines of Geographic Engineering and a critical sense enabling its future engineers the ability to autonomously decide and conduct work in this area, rather than being mere users of the technology.

Admissions Requirements

  1. Hold a higher academic degree in Sciences and Engineering with at least 60 ETCS in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics;
  2. Hold a foreign higher academic degree in one of the areas described in the previous paragraph;
  3. Hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized by the Scientific Committee of the MSc Programme as sufficient to prove capacity to carry out this study program.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

  1. Academic curriculum (training area and grade of first degree) (70%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: Training area (40%)
      First degrees whose study plan includes adequate basic scientific training for Surveying Engineering will be valued.
      The following first degrees will be considered: Geospatial Engineering, Surveying Engineering, Engineering Sciences - Surveying Engineering profile, Topographic Engineering - 100%; Other engineering areas - 90%; Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics - 80%; Courses in Geosciences or Environment - 70%; Other - 20% to 90%.
    • Sub-criterion 2: First degree’s grade (30%)

    For those candidates who do not yet hold a degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized by the Scientific Committee of the MSc Programme as sufficient to prove capacity to carry out this study program, the grade is taken as the creditweighted average of grades in courses taken.

  2. Scientific curriculum and professional experience (30%)
    • Sub-criterion 1: Technical and/or scientific publications and communications (5%)
    • Sub-criterion 2: Participation in research projects (5%)
    • Sub-criterion 3: Professional curriculum (20%)
      The duration and nature of the professional activity in areas of relevance to the Master’s programme shall be considered as follows: relevance of the professional activity (12%); duration of the professional activity (8%).

In case of equal ratings the following criteria will be adopted:

  • First’s degree mark
  • Number of years of professional activity on a relevant field
  • Number of scientific papers
  • Participation in internships during the first degree in the study cycle area

Teaching Language

  • In Portuguese and partially in English
