Courses

Master in Mathematics

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

Providing advanced mathematical training either to prepare students to initiate an international career in scientific investigation or to explore professional activities that require mathematical expertise.

In addition to preparing students for research, the course also opens the following optional paths: attending a third cycle (doctoral) degree in mathematics; entering in the job market with a highly appropriate level of specialisation. The degree covers both fundamental and specialised topics, providing preparation of both the theoretical and applied natures. The wide range of modules to choose from allows learners to cover both fundamental and specialised topics. Students may also enrol in curricular modules from other FCUP master’s programmes as a complement to their training.

This is a highly international degree due to the existence of protocols with other universities and the participation of this programme in a European network. This experience is essential nowadays, due to the ever-increasing globalisation of the labour market, compounded by the high levels of competition in both the academic and business sectors.

TARGET STUDENTS:
This second cycle degree is intended primarily for those who have graduated from first cycle mathematics degrees, or those from other fields with a thorough grounding in maths. It is a constant concern of the department to maintain a course structure which offers the possibility of success to those candidates coming from other first cycle degrees.

Schedule and teaching language

All materials will be distributed in English, including exams, class notes, and other statements. Oral communication will be in English, unless that is not justified.

Admissions Requirements

An applicant should meet one of the following requirements in order to be admitted to the master in mathematics:

  1. to hold a first degree in mathematics or in a related area, e.g. applied mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering if this degree had a strong mathematical component, comparable to a first degree in mathematics.
  2. to hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the scientific committee of the master in mathematics recognizes as sufficient to be able to carry out a master's degree in mathematics.
  3. to be about to complete a first or second degree in an area described above, as long as the degree (or equivalent) is being completed by the end of the enrollment period.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

A scale of 0 to 100 points, with 100 being the best and 0 being the worst evaluation, is used for the selection and ranking of applicants.

  1. Criterion 1: Academic CV: (0 to 95 points).
    1. subcriterion 1: Final and average score obtained in the subject area of the first or second degree (0 to 85 points).
    2. subcriterion 2: Relevant scientific publications in mathematics (0 to 5 points).
    3. subcriterion 3: Prizes and awards in mathematics (0 to 5 points).
  2. Criterion 2 : Professional experience in teaching mathematical courses (0 to 5 points).

Tiebreak criteria:

  1. Average grade of the degree courses ordered in descending order.
  2. ECTS-weighted media of the grades of each course module (in case the applicant has not yet finished a first degree).

The average grades of foreign degrees will be converted to a scale from 0 to 20 an the value ln(R/r) will be added to it, with R being the ranking of the University of Porto and r being the ranking of the foreign university, taking as basis the rankings shown in http://www.webometrics.info.
