The first degree in Forest Engineering and Biotechnology is an innovative undergraduate program, offered together by the
University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and the University of Porto. The program combines forest engineering with biology and biotechnology, emphasizing the transition towards a Green and Digital economy. This new degree focuses on sustainable management of forest and agroforest ecosystems, on biotechnology applied to plant improvement, cloning and genetic transformation, and on innovation in wood technologies. The syllabus combines the knowledge of the Forest sector with novel tools at the forefront of technological development, such as omics, biotechnologies, remote Earth observations, or artificial intelligence. Graduates in Forest Engineering and Biotechnology will be qualified to promote forests as a source of income and social welfare, in the broader context of sustainable development.
Professional Abilities
This innovative degree will deliver graduates with critical thinking, proactive and dynamic, able to play an active role in the modernization and competitiveness of the Forest sector, either by pursuing a professional career, or by following into graduate training in fields related to forests, natural resources, and biotechnology, hereby consolidating their scientific-technological and innovation skills. Graduates in Forest Engineering and Biotechnology should be able to: devise and implement activities related to production, transformation, and trading of forest goods; apply technological and biotechnological tools to improve forest production, increase forest resistance to diseases and environmental changes, and deliver goods that are more suited to their final use; apply technological solutions to forest management (in the adaptation to climate change, in the management of wildfire hazard, in the valorization of forest externalities, or in the rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems); and contribute to (bio)technological research and development, namely regarding the study, improvement and/or valorization of forest resources and territories.
Employment Prospects
The rising challenges of forest sustainability are driving an increasing demand for graduates in Forest Engineering by local municipalities and other structures of the public administration, research and innovation centers, and private companies. Graduates in Forest Engineering and Biotechnology are trained to perform technical, research, and consulting activities, in the public and private sectors, including: associations of forest owners and producers; natural resource management and planning companies; project and consultancy offices; biotechnological industry; forest industries; higher education institutions; scientific research and technological development institutes; or national, regional and local bodies of the public administration. The research facilities and the science-business interface institutes of both Universities will play a central role in bringing students and graduates closer to the job market and in stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship.
