Courses

Master in Mathematics

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

Providing advanced mathematical training either to prepare students to initiate an international career in scientific investigation or to explore professional activities that require mathematical expertise.

In addition to preparing students for research, the course also opens the following optional paths: attending a third cycle (doctoral) degree in mathematics; entering in the job market with a highly appropriate level of specialisation. The degree covers both fundamental and specialised topics, providing preparation of both the theoretical and applied natures. The wide range of modules to choose from allows learners to cover both fundamental and specialised topics. Students may also enrol in curricular modules from other FCUP master’s programmes as a complement to their training.

This is a highly international degree due to the existence of protocols with other universities and the participation of this programme in a European network. This experience is essential nowadays, due to the ever-increasing globalisation of the labour market, compounded by the high levels of competition in both the academic and business sectors.

TARGET STUDENTS:
This second cycle degree is intended primarily for those who have graduated from first cycle mathematics degrees, or those from other fields with a thorough grounding in maths. It is a constant concern of the department to maintain a course structure which offers the possibility of success to those candidates coming from other first cycle degrees.

Schedule and teaching language

All materials will be distributed in English, including exams, class notes, and other statements. Oral communication will be in English, unless that is not justified.

Admissions Requirements

  1. Hold a degree in mathematics or another scientific area with a strong background in mathematics.
  2. Hold a foreign higher education degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the graduate degree in Mathematics.
  3. Hold a school, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as certifying the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the statutory competent scientific body (according to the regulation of the second cycles of the UP).

Note: The applicants who do not prove to have completed their bachelor degree (or equivalent) by the end of the registration period will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

Candidates will be divided into three groups according to their background and with the following priority:

  • Priority will be for candidates who have a bachelor degree in Mathematics or other scientific area with a strong background in Mathematics, which means the equivalent of a minimum of 90 ECTS in Mathematics courses at the level of the bachelor degree. In the case of students whose bachelor degree was obtained at universities outside Europe, will be done a comparison of the student's academic path with that of the FCUP bachelor degree in Mathematics. For this purposal the process of these students should be instructed with the academic background, the grades obtained on the scale used by the institution where the degree was obtained, the syllabus and the teaching time of each of the curricular units in the area of Mathematics in which the candidate obtained success.
  • Serialization will be done according to the following criteria and sub-criteria
    1. Criterion 1: Academic Curriculum Vitae: (95%)
      • Subcriterion 1- Area of formation and degree (85%)
      • Subcriterion 2- Relevant scientific papers published in Mathematics (15%)
      • Subcriterion 3- Achievement or Other Awards (5%)
    2. Criterion 2: Professional experience in teaching Mathematics course units (5%)
    3. Candidates who do not yet have a bachelor degree and / or have a school, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the ability to follow and complete this cycle of studies by the statutory competent scientific body, will be graded according to the criteria and sub-criteria above, but replacing the final average of the degree with the weighted average of the curricular units accomplished.
    4. Tie breaking criterion for serial candidates:
      • Final classification of the bachelor degree.
    5. Remarks:
      • In cases where the Scientific Committee understands, the candidate may be interviewed. In this case, the weighting to be assigned will be: CV (70%) + interview (30%). In the CV assessment the rules that are explicit in Criterion 1 apply.
