Medical Informatics studies the theoretical aspects of information science which are specific to the understanding of biomedical data and practical application of information technology in health systems, aiming at improving security, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and availability of care-giving.
In this context, the Master in Medical Informatics aims at covering the lack of knowledge and expertise in this area, which are present in diverse classes of health professionals.
This programme covers a wide variety of scientific and technical themes such as: electronic medical records; coding and classification systems, ICT regulations in health; signal and image processing; electronic communications between care providers; decision support systems; implementation and assessment of information systems technologies.
This programme has been specially designed for medical doctors, nurses or other health professionals, computer scientists and computer engineers, who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in medical informatics, in order to apply them in their institutions, aiming at improving the delivery of health care.
Possess knowledge and understanding skills that enable and constitute the basis for developments and / or unique applications in many cases in research settings.
Apply their knowledge and skills to understand and solve problems in new and unfamiliar situations, in broad and multidisciplinary contexts and disciplines, although related to their field of studies;
Integrate knowledge, deal with complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including considerations on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities that result from those solutions and judgments or influence them;
Communicate clearly and unambiguously their conclusions and the knowledge and reasoning underlying them, to experts or nonexperts;
Another aim is to enable students of skills and knowledge in the areas of Information Sciences, Health Sciences and Technology Assessment and Information Systems.
Generic:
• Describe and explain the history and values of healt informatics and relations with associated disciplines;
• Analyze and model a particular biomedical problem, by identifying, implementing or validating a possible solution, by using interactive and iterative processes;
• Work in teams, in an effective way, with members of different areas;
• Communicate, in an effective and persuasive way, to audiences of different areas, in written or oral form.
Information Sciences:
• Relate and model information systems with concepts and models of patient care;
• Explain and analyze the nature of data, information and biomedical knowledge;
• Understand and apply data representation and models;
• Recognize and apply the methods and processes used in the different contexts of informatics in health.
Health Sciences:
• Be familiar with the concepts of health regarding biology, biomedicine and public health and with the research issues;
• Understand the effective use of data, information and knowledge in biology, health care, clinical research and health services;
• Analyze and evaluate solutions based on ICT and Health Information Systems.
Technology assessment and Information Systems:
• Be familiar with the core concepts of social, organizational, cognitive and decision sciences;
• Have skills in the design of systems centered in humans, methods of research, ethical, legal and security issues;
• Understand the limitations and challenges of IT solutions;
• Design, implement and validate biomedical software applications;
• Understand the main methods and results of evaluation studies in health technologies, namely, the study of the clinical, social and economic impact of ICT in health.
