Master in Computer Science

The Master’s in Computer Science provides high quality, advanced training to professionals and investigators of a range of specialisations with the field of Computer Science. It increases the knowledge base regarding information technology of those first cycle degree holders who intend to enter directly into the job market whilst simultaneously solidifying the theoretical concepts of those who intend to continue their academic studies.

This master’s degree is particularly relevant for those first cycle degree holders who wish to complement their training. It provides technical and scientific improvements to increase students’ employability. It also serves to prepare scholars for doctoral level training. The Master’s degree is organised into three concentrations:

  • Logic and Computation: This concentration imparts basic theory and programming methods which are immediately applicable in areas such as new programming techniques, cryptology, formal verification for software and the design and analysis of algorithms.
  • Parallel and Distributed Systems: Students in this concentration are trained in high performance distribution systems with particular emphasis on advanced topics such as peer-to-peer networks, mobile computing resources, advanced hardware architecture, and embedded and distributed systems. Grid systems are currently and will continue to constitute the infrastructure of great information systems, of high performance computation and, ultimately, of the Internet itself.
  • Data Mining and Advanced Data Processing: The field of advanced data processing is currently of great importance in business and scientific research. The quantity and quality of data gathered in the entire range of economic and scientific activity plus in public service gives the upmost importance to advanced techniques of storing, managing and processing data. These data may be of any type, whether textual, geographic, audio, image, etc. Their processing requires techniques of extraction, known as data mining. Highly specialised computer professionals are essential to the development and use of advanced data processing systems and this branch of the Master’s programme includes required courses in Data Mining I and II and Advanced Topics in Data Bases.

WORK LANGUAGE
The MCC is a master´s degree that has grown in numbers of international students admitted. The teaching and materials may be available in Portuguese or in English. Preference is given to English whenever there are students who do not master Portuguese. Therefore, candidates for the MCC must have a good command of English.

Employment Prospects

With a Master’s in Computer Science, a person is prepared to work in IT centres of companies and in the service sector such as in health, banking and insurance, working in teams to develop software and in the management of infrastructure and systems. Continuing on to third cycle studies is also an option.

Admissions Requirements

  • Applicants for the Master’s in Computer Science must hold first cycle degrees in computer science, IT, information engineering, computational science, mathematics or related fields.
  • Holders of other first cycle degrees may be accepted, in the event that their curriculum demonstrates adequate basic theoretical background.
