Master's degree in Mathematics for School Teachers

The general objectives of the Master’s in Mathematics Education are to impart the following fundamental skills:
  • in-depth knowledge of mathematics based on research, innovation and the improvement of professional competence
  • understanding and resolving issues in novel situations of broad and multi-disciplinary contexts whether in the practice of research or in the exercise of specialised professional activity
  • uniting forms of knowledge, dealing with complex questions, developing solutions or issuing opinions in situations of limited or incomplete information, including those reflections on the implications and social and ethical responsibilities resulting from said solutions and opinions or that may reflect upon them
  • the ability to clearly and unambiguously communicate your conclusion, knowledge and the logic underlying them equally to specialists of laypeople
  • the ability to engage autonomously in life-long learning
The programme’s specific objectives include:
  • imparting new information about various topics in mathematics and its applications and the contact with new technologies
  • developing the capacity to reflect about fundamental aspects of teaching/learning mathematics as well as about the challenges faced by teachers in the classroom with special emphasis on implementing innovative methods to the classroom teacing of mathematics
  • developing and deepening student awareness about the evolution in basic mathematical concepts as well as the ability to reflect on its epistemological significance

Information

This degree functions primarily after normal working hours. Students may attend part-time, including during the thesis year.
