The aims of the course are to approach with students a set of interdisciplinary concepts in areas such as risk analysis, work safety and occupational and environmental hygiene.
The students will be able to identify, evaluate and control workplace hazards resulting from physical and chemical agents mainly.
The theoretical component will focus on the acquisition of principles that support the methodologies of analysis and the processes of risk reduction/elimination.
The practical component envisages the acqusition of skills on the collection treatment, analysis of aerossols, gases or vapours in confined or open environment, as well as the interpretation of the measured values. Simultaneously, students will carry out work involving the collection, treatment and presentation of information related with environmental safety and hygiene in diversified professional activities.
1- Risk analysis
Introduction
Principles of risk analysis
Risk acceptability
2-Workplace and industrial risk analysis.
General/Legal issues
Workplace safety
Workplace activities and types of hazards and risk
Methodologies of risk assessment
3- Environmental and occupational chemical risk assessment
The Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of classification: physical, health and environmental hazards.
Fire risk evaluation, prevention and fighting.
Occupational Hygiene: exposure, contaminant sources, risk assessment methodologies
Chemical risk of occupational exposure to mixtures.
Measures of chemical risk control.
Environmental hygiene: Pollutants transfer; methodologies of environmental chemical risk assessment
Practical classes
Assessment of the risk of exposure to solid aerossols.
Simplified assessment of chemical risk.
Presentation and discussion of a work about the risk analysis in an industry/organization.
Teaching will essentially rely on the discussion of subjects and resolution of questions/exercises. Further participation of students will be promoted by the search for complimentary information about the topics.
