SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF LABORATORY SESSIONS 1 Performing some basic techniques (purification / identification) common in Organic Chemistry; 2 Synthesis of organic compounds; 3 Development of a critical analysis of the results; 4 Preparation of a scientific report; 5 Development of some autonomy in the laboratory.
SKILLS THAT STUDENTS SHOULD DEVELOP:
1 Planning and structuring the practical work to be undertaken; 2. Personal autonomy in the laboratory; 3 Capacity for searching bibliography; 4 Capacity of scientific writing.
There will be a total of 10 practical sessions. 6 of the following sessions are devoted to 4 practical experiments, according to the following sequence:1- Solubility tests 2-Purification of solid substances by crystallization; 3 + 4-Separation of the components of a mixture by liquid-liquid extraction; 5+6-Synthesis of tert-butil chloride by an SN1 reaction. 4 of the sessions will be devoted to solving exercises related to the experiments performmed.
The unit of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry aims the execution of practical work in the scientific field of organic chemistry, based on the themes versed during the course of Organic Chemistry. Therefore, practical work covering several topics such as esterification reactions, nucleophilic substitution reactions, purification processes of organic substances based on their chemical characteristics (solubility, acidity / alkalinity, density, etc.) will be carried out.

Terms of frequency: the maximum number of absences allowed is 3. The minimum number of practical experiments carried out by the student is 4. The practical grade (PG) has to be equal or higher than 9.5.
The PM is calculated by the following formula: PM = 0,5 x IP + 0,5 x QE where IP is the practical assessment made by the teaching staff, QE is the mark obtained in the written questionnaires given throughout the practical sessions.
The grade of the written exam (WE) cannot be lower than 9.5.
Formula Evaluation: The final grade (NF) of the unit is defined by: NF= 0,6 x PG + 0,4 x WE .
Only the mark of the written exam (WE) can be improved.
