Objectives

To identify the main specifications for food packaging. To identify the main types of packages being used in practice. To select the polymer materials, or their combinations and the additives more adequate to the various types of packages. To identify the main manufacturing processes associated to the various types of packaging.. To perform a Life Cycle Analysis of packages and be able to suggest the most adequate materials and processes.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this course it is intended that the students have the knowledge and tools that enable them to select and propose packaging materials and better ways of packaging processing

Working method

Presencial

Program

Specifications: main characteristics and specifications of food packaging. Barrier properties of mono- and multi-layered systems. Migration: mechanisms and relevant materials. Testing:  relevant legislation for food contact plastics packaging. Requirements concerning food treatment/processing, transport, packaging and storage. Plastics materials for packaging: depending on the type of package and corresponding specifications, what are the most adequate polymer(s)/additives systems . Manufacturing technologies: main processing technologies for rigid and flexible packages (extrusion, thermoforming, injection moulding, blow moulding, lamination). Auxiliary techniques (welding , printing, decorating). Quality control: relevant standards and tests

Mandatory literature
