Objectives

The Chemistry Lab (Q1013) course comprises a set of practical works, involving several experimental techniques and procedures with the aim of providing the students with a basic training in chemistry laboratory techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended that at the end of the semester the student has acquired the following basic skills:i) to be able to perform correctly and accurately a set of basic unit operations in laboratory chemistry;ii) to be able to plan, execute and interpret critically experiments in chemistry related to the practical problem-solving;iii) to know how to correctly prepare reports of experimental activities.

Working method

Program

Lab classes   1. Introduction to the course. Safety rules in the lab.    2. Pratical laborations: PL1 – Preparation of solutions (2 classes). PL2 – Acid-base titration. PL3 – Purification by recrystalization. PL4 – Determination of the stoichiometry of a reaction. PL5 – Destilation . PL6 – Spectrophotometric determination.

Mandatory literature

Eduardo Marques; ; Notas sobre Erros e Tratamento de Dados em Química

Teaching methods and learning activities

Terms of frequency: Continuous assessment without final exam. Maximum allowed number of absences: 1/4 of the total number of classes; 1/3 of pratical laborations.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Trabalho laboratorial 50,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 50,00
Total: 100,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Formula Evaluation: final mark: NLAB = 0,50 x NTP + 0,50 x NAP where NTP is the average grade of all 6 practical laborations and NAP is the individual lab assessment mark    Approval requires NLAB ≥ 10, NAP ≥ 8 and NTP≥ 8.
