Objectives
Introduction to security issues in data networks and information systems. Obtain detailed knowledge on the main vulnerabilities of operating systems and communication networks. Presentation of methodologies to build systems capable of resisting attacks, operational errors and other intelligent adversarial induced occurrences. Study of tools, processes and methods to plan, implement and test secure systems and adapt current systems taking into accounting the evolving environment.
Learning outcomes and competences
After the course, the student should be:
- knowledgeable on the main security problems with operating systems and networks;
- able to identify, assess and diagnose possible risks and vulnerabilities in information systems and data networks;
- able to choose, deploy and configure correct software and hardware tools so that the system presents the adequate security.

Teaching methods and learning activities
In theo-practical classes we will discuss with some detail the essential concepts to understand the workings of the security tools that will be used to audit some systems in a controlled environment.
There will be labs where a network infrastrucuture and services will be available so to explore the security tools to discover vulnerabilities in these systems. Some of the theo-prat classes will use this infrastructure.

Eligibility for exams
- Minimum grade of 40% on lab assignments
- Minimum grade of 40% in exam
Note: both minimums should be met
Calculation formula of final grade
Final grade will be based on assignment grade and exam grade, using the following expression:
(WAG x 10+EG x 10)/20
where:
- EG = exam grade (0-20)
- AG = assignment grade (0-20)
- WAG = min(max(EG - 6, AG), EG + 6))
This applies for all the exams (normal, recourse, grade improvement or special term).
Examinations or Special Assignments
Study and experimentation of a current proposed theme, about systems and/or data network security. Presentation of the work developed on a course mini-workshop, that all course students must attend. The students must prepare a report and a presentation.
There will be two assignements, one survey based and the other a more practical work.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
See grade calculation above.
Classification improvement
See grade calculation above.
