Objectives

To develop the student’s skills for experimental work. This will be achieved through the accomplishment of physical chemistry experiments involving the determination of thermodynamic and kinetics parameters, analysis and interpretation of results and scientific reports writing.

Learning outcomes and competences

To develop the student’s skills for experimental work. To improve the student’s skills in presentation of scientific results and its discussion. To develop critical thinking, encouraging critical analysis of the experimental results obtained and to develop report writing skills.

Program

Laboratory Classes (4h):
Class 1 – Class rules.
Classes 2 to 4 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 5 – Discussion of results.
Class 6 – Oral presentation of written report 1.
Classes 7 to 9 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 10 – Oral presentation of written report 2.
Classes 11 to 12 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 13 – Discussion of laboratory experiments and written reports.
Classes 14 – Final written report.

Laboratory Experiments:
1. Determination of the enthalpies of combustion of several aliphatic alcohols.
1. Determination of the enthalpy of combustion of naphthalene using a bomb calorimeter.
3. Determination of the vapour pressures of water by the isotonescope method. Calculation of the molar enthalpy of vaporization of water at 298.15 K.
4. Determination of the solid-liquid phase diagram for napthalene-biphenyl.
5. Determination of the thermodynamic parameters of ionization of acetic acid at 298.15 K, using pH measurements.
6. Determination of the thermodynamic parameters of ionization of benzoic acid in water and in water/ethanol mixtures, using pH measurements.
7. Determination of the isoelectric point of glycylglycine, using conductimetric and potentiometric measurements. Determination of ionic conductivities.
8. Determination of the specific rate of a second order reaction and its variation with temperature.
9. Study of the ionic strength effect on the rate of reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by ascorbic acid.

Calculation formula of final grade

NLAB is the overall laboratory mark equal to the average of the laboratory marks obtained on the laboratory practical sessions.
NR1 and NR2 are the marks obtained on the written reports and oral presentations 1 and 2.
NRF is the mark obtained on the final written report.

The final mark (NF) is calculated according to:
NF = 0.40 × NLAB +  0.15 NR1 + 0.15 NR2 + 0.30 × NRF
