Objectives, activities and expected/achieved results
CIQUP research center is a chemistry research, locate at the University of Porto, founded four decades ago,
which have been continuously evolving to reach a broadly recognized research center of excellence. CIQUP is aResearch Centre essentially dedicated to experimental chemistry. Has an international recognition in severalfields and is in many instances pioneer in Portugal in the use of methods and expertise in fields of:
- Molecular and supramolecular thermodynamics;
- Electroanalytical and interfacial chemistry;
- Chemi- and bioluminescence;
- Chemical/biochemical sensing;
- Nanochemistry and nanomaterials;
- Medicinal chemistry;
- Physical chemistry of self-organized systems;
- Excited state reactivity dynamics of chemical thermodynamics;
- Soft matter;
- Physical chemistry of ionic fluids;
- Science Communication, Education and Society;
- Water, environment and energy

MISSION AND GOALS
Along the 2018-2023 period, CIQUP was organize in five areas of competence, designated as:
RG1 | Medicinal Chemistry;
RG2 | Molecular and supramolecular thermodynamics;
RG3 | Nanostructures and self-organization;
RG4 | Physical analytical chemistry & electrochemistry;
RG5 | Education, Science Communication and Society.
Since 2021 CIQUP is part of the Associate Laboratory IMS | Institute of Molecular Sciences, contributing to thethematic lines:
MATsoft - Functional materials, soft matter and nanoscience
MEDlife - Medicinal, biological and biophysical chemistry for health
H2Oenv - Technologies for water, environment and energy
SYNcat - Synthesis, catalysis and chemical processes
CHEMfocus - Fundamentals and awareness
The Institute of Molecular Sciences, IMS, is a newly created Associate Laboratory that encompasses three R&Dunits: Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE, Instituto Superior Técnico, CQE@IST, and CQE@FCUL at Faculdadede Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa), Centro de Química de Coimbra (CQC) and CIQUP | Centro deInvestigação em Química da Universidade do Porto. The three R&D units have been evaluated as Excellent inthe 2017-2018 FCT evaluation process.
