Alípio Jorge works in artificial intelligence, focusing on machine learning, data science, recommendation systems, and natural language processing. He holds a degree in Applied Mathematics/Computer Science from the University of Porto (UP), a PhD in Computer Science from UP, and an MSc from Imperial College, University of London. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences and was the department's director from 2018 to 2024. He achieved habilitation in 2021. He is a researcher and coordinator at LIAAD, a unit of INESC TEC. He has been involved in projects related to natural language processing, web automation, recommendation systems, information retrieval, and decision support. He frequently collaborates with Porto Business School and has coordinated several fundamental and applied research projects.
He teaches machine learning and programming. He directed the Master’s in Computer Science from 2010 to 2013 and is a participant in the MAP-i doctoral programme. He was part of the team that created the Master’s in Data Science at FCUP, which he directed between 2017 and 2019. He co-founded and co-directed the Bachelor’s in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. From 1996 to 2009, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, where, together with colleagues, he launched the Master’s in Data Analysis and Decision Support Systems. He directed this master’s from its inception in 2000 until 2008. He also served as an assistant trainee for one semester at the Department of Civil Engineering at FEUP. He was Portugal’s sherpa for artificial intelligence at the European Commission and the lead author of the first version of the Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Strategy in 2019.
