Master in Network and Information Systems Engineering

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
Transição MERSI: Consultar

The Master in Network and Information Systems Engineering aims at the advanced training of particularly qualified professionals for the analysis, planning, installation and administration of complex and distributed data storage, processing, and communication systems, qualified to perform functions of great responsibility and leadership in complex, multidisciplinary contexts and with a focus on innovation, or to proceed to a PhD. The duties that may be performed by a Master in Network and Information Systems Engineering include, for example, the planning of infrastructures for complex computer networks and respective services, the management and administration of cloud systems, the coordination and management of tasks related to software implementation, in-depth analysis of security and risk inherent in the integration of information systems, or the preparation of budgets for the installation, maintenance and updating of computer systems.

Programme Structure

This 120 ECTS second cycle of studies is organized in two academic years (four semesters). The first year consists of an organized set of semestral courses, corresponding to 60 ECTS, whose successful completion grants a non-degree awarding diploma of specialization in Network and Information Systems Engineering. The second year consists of a dissertation of 48 ECTS of scientific character, original and specially carried out for this purpose, whose public defense will allow obtaining the Master's Degree in Network and Information Systems Engineering, complemented by courses totaling 12 ECTS.
The course of study includes seven mandatory courses, six in the scientific field of Computer Science, which provide essential skills for a Network and Information Systems Engineer, and one in the scientific field of Management. It also includes two Specific Option courses in fields of great relevance to the study cycle and two Generic Option courses to choose freely among the second cycle courses in the field of Computer Science offered at FCUP, giving the students some degree of freedom to take courses in the field of CS that, while not so directly relevant to the study cycle, they consider useful for their academic and professional career. Furthermore, it includes 6 ECTS credits in U.Porto Option courses, which may be any second cycle or soft skills courses offered at the University of Porto.

Schedule and teaching language

This degree works in daytime schdule. Lecturing and course materials are available either in Portuguese or English, with priority given to English if there are students that do not master Portuguese. As such, candidates should have good English proficiency.

Employment Prospects

The broad range of functions for which a master in Network and Information Systems Engineering is qualified ensures a strong demand for their professional services, namely in institutions which develop or sell software, provide landline or mobile telecommunication services, provide consultancy services in the planning and running of networks and information systems, including cloud computing, or build and/or sell hardware. They may also easily integrate IT departments in different types of organizations (companies, service providers, universities, etc.) in the fields of healthcare, banking, insurance, multimedia, etc.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  1. Hold a first cycle degree in Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, Computer Engineering Sciences, or a first or second cycle degree in related field considered adequate by the scientific committee of the study cycle;
  2. Hold a foreign higher academic degree which is acknowledged as fulfilling the objectives of a first cycle degree in any of the aforementioned areas;
  3. Have an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum which the scientific committee of the study cycle recognizes as sufficient to certify the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
Candidates who have not yet obtained the degree by the time of application but are able to conclude it until the date of enrollment must present evidence of their average grade at the date of application, as well as the list of courses to be completed for obtaining the first cycle degree.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

Candidates with bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, Computer Engineering Sciences, or closely related fields) will be sorted first.

They will be sorted according to the following criteria and subcriteria:

  • Academic curriculum (academic background and average grade) (85%)
    • Academic field (30%)
    • Bachelor's degree adjusted GPA (70%)

    The adjusted GPA is obtained by normalizing the bachelor’s degree GPA to the 0-20 scale (rounded to the nearest integer), adding the value of ln(R/r), and rounding to the first decimal digit, with ln expressing the natural logarithm and R and r being, respectively for the University of Porto and the university issuing the degree, the positions in the world ranking published in http://www.webometrics.info Candidates who do not yet hold a bachelor's degree and/or have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the competent scientific body will be sorted according to the criteria and sub-criteria indicated above, but replacing the final average grade with the weighted average of the successfully completed courses.
  • Scientific curriculum and professional experience (15%)
    • Technical and / or scientific publications and communications (50%)
    • Participation in research projects, in internships in the area of study cycle or other relevant professional experience (50%)

Tie-breaking rules:

In the event of a tie, the first tie-breaking criterion will be the bachelor's degree adjusted GPA, and the second tie-breaking criterion will be the result of an interview with the candidate assessing his/her technical knowledge and suitability for the degree, giving priority to candidates showing better mastery of basic knowledge in Computer Science, Networks and Computer Systems.
