Objectives
Besides nutritional issues, the supply and demand of food is based on different constraints which condition the market, such as production of food and agricultural policies, distribution, promotional and price strategies. The core aim of this course unit is to provide understanding on the impact of these factors and transform them into opportunities to enhance the nutritional status of populations.
Program
To proceed to a critical analysis of the theoretical principles underlying the construction of a nutritional/food policy.
To contribute to the planning, implementation, management and assessment of nutritional/food policies at regional, national and international level.
To contribute to the drawing of nutritional/food policies, taking into account agricultural, environmental, social, economical, and health conditions, as well as related policies.
To contribute to the construction of information systems to support decision-making on nutritional policy.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The theoretical-practical classes should enable the students to build a nutritional/food policy aimed at a certain region, on a simulatory basis. Therefore, the necessary data and adequate computer programmes are provided in the beginning of the academic year so that students may assemble a range of strategies and publicly justify them afterwards. Theoretical classes provide the necessary information to justify the options made. The works shall be monitored over the semester by the teacher, and discussed publicly with the rest of the class in the end of the semester.
