Objectives
1. To contribute for the understanding of biology in humans;
2. To contribute for the acquisition of biochemistry language skillls, and to the knowledge of appropriate methods of study in this scientific area;
3. To identify the composition of living organisms, their chemical reactions, and factors affecting these transformations;
4. To study metabolism, particularly of amino acidic metabolism, synthesis and catabolic pathways of amino acid derivatives
Program
I. General aspects of proteic metabolism.
1.1 Amino acid synthesis and endogenous protein hydrolyses.
1.2 Heat shock proteins.
1.3 Catabolism of amino acids.
1.4 Amino acid-derived nitrogen metabolism.
1.5 Amino acid derivatives with biologic relevance; Heme metabolism. Synthesis and degradation of purine and pirimidine nucleotides.
II. Relevance of biochemistry in the udnerstanding, treatment and prevention of human common diseases.
2.1 Stress
2.2 Cachexia
2.3 Autophagy
III. Integration of metabolism.
3.1 Intercelular signaling and signal transduction mechanisms,
3.2 Diet-starving cycle,
3.3 Different organs and tissues interdependence
3.4 Physical exercise
3.5 Mechanisms of regulation and factors affecting energy balance
3.6 Mechanisms of regulation and factors affecting nitrogen balance
3.7 Mechanisms of regulation and factors affecting nutritional balance
Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures will be given in a 40-hour per student, during the second semester, with the following pedagogic items:
• 2 theoretical lectures per week (Tuesdays at 10h00 -11h00 e Thursdays at 12h00 às 13h00, FCNAUP)
• A 90-minute theoretical-pratical lecture per week (within the approapriate Schedule of FCNAUP).

Eligibility for exams
Written test – several multiple choice questions, a small number of short-answered questions (the student should answer 4 chosen out of 6 questions), and one full-answer question (to chose out of 3).
