Objectives

It is intended to provide students with terminology, language and concepts that constitute a knowledge base of multiple physiological fields, to be applied subsequently in other course disciplines and professional experience in the future.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended that students are able to understand the function of major organs and systems with important application in problem solving.

1. LECTURES (30 hours):

Cell Physiology: Cell membranes, signal transduction, intracellular signaling.

Nervous System: General organization; Autonomic nervous system; Action potentials; Neurotransmitters.

Muscle: Mechanisms of activation; Contraction and relaxation; Muscle; Smooth muscle, Heart muscle.

Cardiovascular system: Electrical activity of the heart, Cardiac cycle; Determinants of cardiac systolic and diastolic functions; Regulation of vascular function; Regulation of cardiac output and venous return; Vascular endothelium; Special circulations; Nutritional status and cardiovascular pathophysiology.

Blood and Haemostasis: Elements of the blood; Platelet physiology, Blood coagulation, fibrinolysis.

Respiratory System: Pulmonary ventilation; Hematosis; Transport of blood gases, pulmonary circulation; Nutritional status and respiratory pathophysiology.

 

2. THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES (26 Hours):

Cell membranes; Synapses; Action potentials; Muscle metabolism; Adaptation to exercise; ECG; Cardiac cycle; Pulses and blood pressure;Iron and vitamin B12 metabolism; Blood count and anemia; Spirometry; Case studies; Reviews.

Eligibility for exams

Presence of two thirds of the TP classes. Theoretical examination exceeding 9.0/20 values. Final classification exceeding 9.50/20 values.

Final Classification = TP + (0.75*T).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The working students will be graded in the theorical - pratical component by a written examination.
