Objectives
In Seminar I is expected that the PhD group of students follow the themes proposed for dialogue and participate in the questioning of the approaches presented throughout the sessions and readings.
Under the theme "tensions and contradictions of contemporaneity in arts education", the Seminar seeks above all to perform circular discussions regarding the injunctions produced by contemporary society.
To that end, the Seminar aims to create an open space of critical analysis about the ways of thinking and view education in relation to art, assuming the crisis of contemporary society for a critical, citizen and plural arts education.
Learning outcomes and competences
Understanding the singularities of the epistemological field of arts education and of its knowledge production;
To reflect on the aesthetic, social, cultural and political subjectivities implied in arts education discourses and practices;
Activating critical analysis in order to formulate research problems focused on the relations between arts and education;
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Program
In the beginning of the semester, the syllabus and themes of Seminar I are negotiated with the group (what do we want to talk/think about during this semester?), and are connected with proposals for mandatory reading, from which we are expected to create discussions in group. In recent years, such themes, although articulated under the topic "Tensions and contradictions of arts education in contemporary times", have given rise to very diverse approaches and discussions, highlighting the following: Conceptions of education in the interrelationship with art; Arts education and the crisis of democracies; The contemporary (Agamben) and the images (Didi-Huberman); The Narrator, the experience and the dialectical image (Walter Benjamin); Art history, pedagogical logos and arts education; The image of thought (Deleuze) and the problem of learning; among others.
In 2022/2023 we intend to recover some of the theoretical genesis underlying the Seminar, but moving it now between the following topics: 1. Acts of reading and writing and the field of arts education; 2. History of art, pedagogical logos and arts education; 3. Personal and epistemological placements facing the research
For each of these themes specific readings will be required. The present themes, as well as readings, are designed to support the critical reflection of each student about their own levels of implication (personal, historical, professional) in the field of arts education.

Comments from the literature
From the mandatory references, the teacher will make a previous selection according to the themes of the program and the reading proposals agreed with the group at the beginning of the semester. During the sessions, other proposals for deep reading can be made.
Teaching methods and learning activities
The seminar aims to build a space for critical debate of ideas on the issues of education in relation to art, by setting a space for open conversation and participation of different voices. Thus, the sessions will be a qualified context for a debate around texts and images in the field of arts education, as well as for the discussion from the educational and artistic experiences shared during the Seminar.

Attendance and qualified participation in class.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final classification is obtained by evaluating an individual written papper performed by the student. This papper should include the problems discussed in the classes and the research concerns brought to the seminary space, by experimenting, reflecting, expanding, questioning and interpreting different personal and epistemological placements in the field of arts education. The contents and the form of this final papper are articulated with the subject of Methodologies and Research Practices I, regarding the design of the research project and its presentation to the group at the end of the 1st Semester.

Classification improvement
Improvements in the final assessment will take place under the terms of the regulation of evaluation (i.e. only once and in one of the two seasons immediately subsequent to that assessment in which students obtained approval), and shall consist of a complete reformulation of the written paper.
Observations
Seminar I sessions take place in a face-to-face teaching. However, according to justified situations, they may take place in online template also.
