Objectives

This course aims to
1 - ensure basic knowledge od European Art History from mid-19th century to mid-20th century
2- develop critical thought about art concepts and practices of the period
3- promote the capacity to evaluate the relevance of some major modern artists to the development of contemporay art practices.

Program

Art movements and issues central to the international art production between mid-19th and mid-20th centuries that contributed to the establishment of the modern art paradigm will be discussed; also individual artists and some exemplary works will be analysed.
1- The birth of Modern Art in context: political, social and cultural conditions
2- Movements and actors of Modern Art: from Realism to Surrealism

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each session will include:
1- visual and audio-visual presentation of major works by selected modern art movements and artists
2- discussion of some of the underlying concepts and issues raised by them, based on the analysis of texts provided in the section "Documents" of this site.

Observations

Information to prepare for the exam:

The exam will have 4 questions and you will chose 3.

General recommendations:
The exam will be about the art movements and artists discussed in class. To prepare for the exam use the general bibliography listed and the texts included in the section Documentos. Also, use specific bibliography about the artists that interest you the most.

Specific recommendations:
Study a painting of your choice by Manet (except the ones included in Sumarios) in connection with Baudelaire’s writings about the painter of modern life.
Bring to the exam a photocopy of a work of art by a Impressionist or Post-impressionist artist discussed in class (ver Sumarios) and be prepared to answer a question about it. The reproduction should indicate the author, title, date and technique.
Prepare the subject Art and Politics in reference to one of the artists discussed in class (see Sumarios).
