Objectives

Objectives: The student will learn a set of critical and theoretical methodologies, organically integrated in the professional practice of design, its teaching and, specifically, in writing, editing and publishing.

Skills: editing, editorial design, writing, publishing, research, public debate, participation in collective projects.


Learning outcomes and competences

Learning outcomes: Having concluded Design Studies, the student will have an operative knowledge of design's theory and criticism, being able to do research work in academic contexts, as well as apply this knowledge to the professional practice of design. He will be able to take part in editorial, curatorial and critical projects, either as a collaborator or as an organizer.

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Previous knowledge: editorial design, using appropriate software.

Program

The year's structure is divided into a number of self-contained workshops.

1 - Lecture on typography: the aim is to review and refine the knowledge acquired by students in this area, focusing on editorial matters.

2 - Workshop on editorial design: Indesign. Text editing in books and magazines. Bookdesign and design of publications with text and image using grids.

3 - Lecture on contemporary independent publishing, including a brief history and appreciation of several publications.

4 - Production of one colective publication.

5 - Final Individual Project.

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation of the investigative work weighted with class participation.

Calculation formula of final grade

Average of the work of every work developed. Média ponderada dos trabalhos desenvolvidos.  1/6 book. 1/6 grid design. 1/6 Colective publication. 1/2 final project.

Note: Work delivered late or/and not seen before will be penalized (3 grades in a scale of 20). The student can attempt to better his work in the fifteen days following the evaluation.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students in outwards Erasmus semestral mobility, without assured equivalence at this UC: production of a work, during the recourse period.

Exam: a work produced during two weeks.

Classification improvement

A editorial work produced during two weeks.

Observations

Mobility students won't be accepted.
