Objectives
Know, understand and experiment with different writing systems (Calligraphy and Typography). Present and sensitize students to issues, and current ancestors, such as unwritten societies, pre-writing, alphabets, calligraphy, graffiti, artificial writing, drawing lettering, artifacts and media writing, with consequences for the historical-value cultural paradigms of contemporary verbal language. The introduction to calligraphy allows sensitize the student to the formal and aesthetic origins of the characters, as well as understand and evaluate: the proportions, rhythm and the spaces between letters, words and lines. Mastering the basics of Calligraphy and Typography allows acquiring more results and technical skills to progress with artistic and scientific soundness of subdisciplines in the field of design as type design (ortotypography, microtypography, macrotypography), corporate branding, infographics and editorial design.

Program
The annual program focuses on two key areas of Communication Design: Calligraphy and Typography. The students are motivated and geared to experimentation, creation and production of very concrete and specific projects taking as its starting point some pertinent dichotomies, such as: I (individual) and society (collective); handcraft and industrial; analog and digital; natural and artificial; memory and gesture; graphics and artificial/virtual written. The themes of the projects to be undertaken are: 1) STYLE IMAGE (collage); 2) CALLIGRAPHY (monogram/label); 3) BOOK (cover); 4) DOUBLE PAGE (layout vs. artwork); 5) TYPOGRAPHIC DRAWING (infographics/editorial design); 6) TYPE-IMAGE (poster/installation); 7) DIGITAL PORTFOLIO (Internet); 8) DESIGNER NOTEBOOK (diary book, notepad, notebook studies).

Teaching methods and learning activities
The teacher as counselor, mediator and provides stimulating and provocative reflection on topics, authors, works, artefacts and craft sessions or mechanical systems; sessions for research, development and implementation of real experimental projects, and/or 'pilot'; collective presentation sessions, analysis, discussion and criticism of the projects; sessions opened with the presentation of monographic works, commented exposition of graphic objects, films and educational visitings.

Eligibility for exams
Assessment is continuous, which implies the systematic presence of the student in class. Punctuality and attendance are recorded in the leaf itself, provided and controlled by the teacher in the first thirty minutes of each class. The minimum frequency of attendance (attending classes) is 80% of the total contact hours. The components of evaluation are: diligence; participation; notes; concept; manual dexterity; technical personnel; visual/oral presentation; attitude and self-motivation.
Calculation formula of final grade
The evaluation process is ongoing and continuous, and results from the sum of the theoretical and practical experiments demonstrated eplo student during the school year, with a view to achieving the objectives. The final projects will be presented, discussed and evaluated in the last week of classes.
