Objectives

Contexto e Práticas da Ilustração intends to position itself as a place for conscious and practice of illustration, focused on its narrative approach. The main objectives of this curricular unity are:

1 - Study the different definitions of illustration and its action fields in contemporary editorial context.

2 - Consider the grammar for illustration that defines its multiple occurrences as a visual expression.

3 - Study its formal, conceptual and historical context searching for its differences and similarities.

4 - Feature different audiences in order to define the variety of public in illustration.

5 - To map the territories in which illustration takes action, from global to local communities.

6 - Find means of dissemination of contemporary illustration in Portugal.

7 - As a result, is expected the development and practice of visual speech based on own research and self-awareness.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended to raise awareness of the importance of illustration in editorial projects. Autonomy in research and development of practical projects that operate on different fields of illustration that are addressed during the semester.

The manifestations of illustration, sometimes with ephemeral and effervescent approach, reflect most of the times about a society aware of its tradition and modernity. Thus, the illustration acquires its own language where often support and context claim themselves as a platform for the  narratives. The book, the periodical publishing, poster or advertising among others boost the development of complementary images in the interpretation of text and the content of narrative. The illustrated images may assume themselves as experiment and build of independent imaginaries. There will be privileged self-publishing work.

There will be used as study-work, illustrated images divided in four different approaches:

Teaching methods and learning activities

There will be provided material for analysis and discussion. Will be presented projects to develop upon the subjects that are being addressed during classes. There will be produced projects that affirm and reflect the use of illustration as part of visual narrative, in its editorial perspective according to a transdisciplinary model.
