Objectives

- To know and understand the history of typography and calligraphy, from the Romans to the present day.
- Mastering the anatomy and nomenclature of typography.
- Reflect on the principles of typography for editorial development, characteristics and constraints.
- Mastery of analog tools of typographic design: nibs, inks, drawing posture.
- Master the tools of digital typeface design: Glyphs and FontLab Studio.
- Clearly define the appropriateness of a typeface to the content and editorial context.

Learning outcomes and competences

- The student will be prepared to design a typeface that aims to fulfill his needs regarding editorial design,
justifying his choices, theoretically and practically.

Program

The syllabus was developed so that the student gradually learns empirical and theoretical knowledge on the principles and issues surrounding the design of a typeface in digital format. The knowledge that a font is a very deep historical process littered with small technicalities, such as Spacing and Kerning, the Features and OpenType. There will be room for a permanent connection between history and technique, until the student can draw typographical marks of an editorial nature, with very defined structures.

Teaching methods and learning activities



The methodology followed by the discipline of Design de Tipos  will be supported in a phased approach, of theoretical character, but always with presentation of practical examples drawn in class, the constituent elements of the entire six-month program of discipline. The example in place to dispel any doubts and to understand the processes of design and thinking in a more natural way. Monitoring is as personalized as possible, with exemplifications set by the teacher. Assessment will be continuous. Attendance is also an evaluation factor being the presence in required classes. The final evaluation of the final average results of ongoing assessments and the percentage of classes attended.
