Objectives

To introduce and develop skills in drawing, understood as an operative instrument of knowledge and recognition; to develop perceptual and visual acuity in relation to different types of drawing; to understand drawing as a vehicle that operates, interacts and relates our perception with representation; to develop skills in understanding, manipulating and selecting different ways of making and using drawing representational systems; to provide knowledge in the context of drawing; to learn the meaning and know how to apply the basic terminology of drawing; to alert the student on the importance of the heritage and history of drawing.

Program

1.‘In the limits of drawing’
The questions on representation: what we see, what we draw.
What can be drawn.
The mechanisms of vision - visual sensors, perception, cognition, brain hemispheres.
The drawing machines: camera lucida, camera obscura, Alberti’s grid.
Drawing and Photography: two ways of seeing.
What we see is not a drawing vs a drawing is not what we see.

2.‘In the specific of drawing’
2.1. Enabling vision - drawing with discipline.
Spatial perception and representation.
Size and distance (scale and proportion).
Maping and measuring.
Full and empty.
Line drawing and filling.
Contour drawing and ‘direct filling’.

2.2.Different approaches of drawing: strategies and representational systems.
The strategies of action: sketch, draught, study. Specificities and operative skills.
Representational systems: orthogonal and conical perspective, plans, elevations and sections; non systems: atmospheric perspective and diagrams.

2.3.‘In and beyond the surface’
Understanding, organizing, communicating.
The real and its different representations, intentions and strategies.
The relation between the internal and the external:
the anatomy of form, structure and volume, shaping and tonal values.
Consolidation of perceptual skills and graphical representations and their relationship with different purposes.

The 405 hours of work (HT) in this course are organized as follows:
192 contact hours (HC) from lecture classes to mostly practical exercises, including critical analysis of students work. The remaining 213 hours are used by the students in the development of their individual work and skills. The course also provides field trips for thematic classes and visits to exhibitions and places of interest, being also open for seminars, workshops, etc.

Evaluation Type

It is expected from the student: correct implementation of the proposed working methods; strict compliance with the proposed work plan; attendance and punctuality; application of observation skills through different types of drawing; understanding of the constructive attitudes of drawing; understanding the different ways of drawing and representational systems; acquaintance with the historical heritage of drawing; ability to organize and systematize the work; involvement and ability to work individually; capacity for reflection and self-criticism.

Calculation formula of final grade
