Abstract (EN):
To develop novel forms of lap joints which can be used at high and low temperatures, especially for composite materials. Advanced composites (such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics) often have very different coefficients of thermal expansion than do metals. Also, adhesives that are suitable for use at high temperatures are often too brittle to be used at low temperatures. Conversely, adhesives that exhibit useful strength and ductility at low temperatures are often weak at high temperatures. By suitably profiling the ends of the joint and by choosing the correct adhesive, it was possible to produce a hybrid joint, which can operate over a much wider range of temperature.
