Bienal'25 Fotografia do Porto | 'Peles de Imagem, Espelhos Luminosos' Exhibition

From 16th May (opening at 6 pm) to 19th July 2025 | FBAUP's Exhibition Pavilion

Artist: Sofia Borges
Curated by Susana Lourenço Marques

Based on the collections of the Museum of Natural History and Science and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, Sofia Borges makes an artistic residency that brings a selection of objects from these collections into play.

In collaboration with the artist Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, Sofia Borges creates a sound piece with extracts from the writings of the French anthropologist Bruce Albert, based on the recordings of the Yanomami shaman Davi Kopenawa, published in the book The Falling Sky: Words of a Yanomami Shaman (2010).

In Albert's words: photographic images are designated by the term utupë, which means "corporeal image, vital essence, primordial mythical form", and also "reflection, shadow, echo, miniature, replica, reproduction, drawing". While skin is a "bodily vessel", opposed to the inner "image" (utu-pé).

The exhibition culminates in a total work of art, in which the notions of time and representation are inverted to give us back the ancestral dimension of the way animals look at human beings, those humans of today and those who, in the first age, were made into animals.

It will be open to the public until 19th July and it can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, from 2 pm to 6 pm, at the Faculty’s Exhibition Pavilion. Admission is free.
