Apresentação Pessoal

Susana Carvalho (1979, Porto, Portugal) studied communication design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL). In 2004, she moved to the Netherlands to complete the Master's programme in Type and Media at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK). In 2018 her interest in education led her to receive a MEd in Education in Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam where she researched the potential of space as a pedagogical tool in the graphic design classroom. 

Susana is part of Atelier Carvalho Bernau, a design studio based in Porto, Portugal. The atelier was originally established in 2005 by Susana Carvalho and Kai Bernau in The Hague, the Netherlands. The atelier focus on work for the culture and publishing fields, both locally and internationally.

Apart from the studio practice, she has taught graphic design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK) from 2002 to 2021 and typography at Artez in Arnhem. She has been a guest tutor, leading workshops and lectures throughout Europe.
