The program reflects a generative practice-based and student-centred learning. Students progressively assume greater responsibility for their learning throughout the program.
The program stems from the interaction between 4 structuring vertices:
1) Fundamental Themes of Drawing: this strand introduces specific drawing attitudes and knowledge, thus familiarizing students with the historical and contemporary diversity of drawing categories, means of expression and methodology.
2) Fields and Contexts of Drawing: This strand makes known a diversity of professional applications and practices of drawing that use it as a mediation of thought, communication and narrative, as lingua franca between art, design and science.
3) Transversal Themes: they allow students to position themselves and their work in relation to Art History and fundamental ideas of Aesthetics, within a field that is shared with the other degrees at FBAUP.
4) Complementary Practices: topics that introduce and deepen disciplinary intersections between the practice of drawing and other artistic and technological disciplines;
The first year - Perception and Visual Thinking - emphasizes the education of perception and fundamental skills for formulating ideas that are visually expressed. It introduces students to the historical discourses and contemporary debates of drawing, in direct relation to collections and exhibitions. This learning takes place in technical processes and means traditionally associated with drawing, as well as within digital resources, haptic interfaces and 3D simulations to assist representation and morphology.
The second year - Strategies, Means and Processes - places the emphasis on drawing strategies, means and processes. Based on themes that relate body representations, space and narrative, the historical knowledge of drawing is related to the creative and imagery potential of digital resources. This level introduces students to means, techniques and strategies adapted to the diversity of applications they will find in the third year.
At the third year – Fields of Application – students are encouraged to create new themes and strategies for drawing, in a personal project proposed within an artistic or professional area of interest. This level relates drawing as an art practice with contexts of industrial application, scientific areas and the work with the community. The seminars, developed from themes stemming from students’ projects, accompany the last semester as guidance and theoretical framework. In addition to specific drawing courses, students can choose open electives at FBAUP and UP, exploring other areas of knowledge (environmental sciences, life sciences, heritage sciences and techniques, etc.).
The final project, developed within the scope of the Drawing Project courses, will explore the diversity of topics, applications and debates that characterize the contemporary nature of drawing and its intersections.
