The Doctoral Program in Art Education (pdDEA) is a joint doctoral program between the University of Porto and the University of Lisbon, involving their Faculties of Fine Arts, Faculties of Psychology and Educational Sciences, and the Institute of Education.
This Doctoral Program has been conducting research from a decolonial, feminist, and intersectional perspective, aligning with the demand for art education practices that are attentive to their historicity in current and urgent reparative politics. In this sense, one of the goals of the program, in various fields of action (from schools to cultural institutions or communities), is to contemplate anti-discriminatory practices in art education. The group of students is encouraged to experiment with gestures, where ideation and action are organically interconnected, informed by a state of the art that looks beyond a hegemonic knowledge field.
Theses, and their formats—ranging from more conceptual to those with a strong practical or experimental component—are also focal points of research that are closely tied to the ongoing research problems.
With a strong relational component in its pedagogical dynamics and research scope, the Doctorate in Art Education opens up research spaces in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, educational work in artistic and cultural institutions, and art education. Being a joint doctoral program between universities, its coordination with different research units establishes diverse dialogues.
The Doctoral Program organizes the EPRAE – Meeting of Research Practices in Art Education annually and coordinates the Journal Derivas – Research in Art Education, where ongoing research works are regularly published.
The course is taught in Portuguese, with adaptation between Portuguese and English when groups include students who are not yet proficient in Portuguese.
