Wood - Level II
Instance: 2003/2004 - A
Objectives
The operational structure of the theoretical-practical course units of the 5th Year of the degree in Sculpture is implemented by means of a coordination including the course units Workshop II and the optional course units of Stoneworks, Woodworks and Metalworks.
They are taught therefore as a sort of common course unit, organized as a sculpture workshop, in which each student is expected to develop a project of personal research by means of accomplishment of several individual works. These should be performed on the raw materials that have been selected in accordance with the technology corresponding to the optional course unit in which the student is enrolled.
The opportunity given to students so that they can accomplish a sole project also enables them to concentrate precisely on research and dedicate themselves to the workshop. A more thorough experience and corresponding expressive exploration of the materials used arises from this process.
Program
The programme was scheduled so as to allow the students not only the technical skills to conceive sculptures in general, but also wood sculptures in particular.
Practice of the whole technical process by means of use of the media made available to them for the exploration of raw materials. Knowledge of the traditional processes and manual and mechanical tools, as well as on the technology existing in the workshops.
Study by means of experimental exercises that may also represent the beginning of a more demanding work, or works of personal research on the expressive characteristics and physical and mechanical attributes of the existing raw materials. This is aimed at meeting materials and proposals.
Development of work proposals leading to the deepening of expressive technical and workshop issues in the approach to sculpture used in wood sculpture, in accordance with the parameters applied to contemporary sculpture.
