Objectives

This course unit —Sculptural Field and Contemporaneity —intends to approach epistemologically and ontologically the sculpture fields from the beginning of the last century until the present moment, promoting the knowledge of this expanded subject, not only within itself but in the wider field of the fine arts.

Sculptural Field and Contemporaneity aims to raise awareness within the students for the fundamental discussions in the field of contemporary sculpture, promoting the acquisition of interpretative, critical and analytical skills of the artistic production of our time. It also seeks to define a conceptual framework that allows the student to inform and develop their individual artistic project.

Learning outcomes and competences

Critical capacity for analysis and discussion on seminal essays and contemporary art works.

Ability to understand the implications of critical and artistic discourses for contemporaneity.

Competence in writing original, referenced and relevant  texts for the subjects concerned.

Ability to present a relevant case study.

This unit Sculptural field and contemporaneity promotes an organized overview on paradigmatic changes that have occurred in the artistic practice since the beginning of the last century until today. Also promotes a critical discussion on the disciplinary context of sculpture in its various thematic dimensions, processes and techniques and its dialogues with other universes, namely: architecture and its spatial experiences, the field of performance, the sound experimentation, the relationship with moving image, the experimental practices in the field of writing, the collaborative and relational approaches, the relationship with the artist books, among others.


As a final result, this unit promotes the development of research methods, organization and knowledge management. Also provide a set of tools that can contribute to improve the operation of individual artistic projects and a capacity to development of an theoretical essay with critical approach of innovative character.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Contents will be displayed using slideshow, films and critical texts. Eventually guest authors and artists, or visits to art exhibitions with particular interest to the contents discussed on the course. 

All sessions will include moments of debate and discussion around the issues raised.

Theoretical essays or theoretical-practical will be requested from the study of the themes and / or the authors approached to be presented and discussed in class.

Eligibility for exams

Frequency is achieved through Continuous Assessment, which presupposes high attendance at classes and active participation in them, autonomy of research and knowledge of the contents and also the development of a personal and autonomous vision of the subjects taught.

To obtain frequency in conjunction with Continuous Assessment, it is mandatory to prepare an essay project that meets the following conditions:
Proposal – Theoretical or practical theoretical essay

Preparation of a short original essay written or through another support or reflective means that develops one or more contents of the sessions.

The essay must be delivered in digital format (pdf, wav/mp3, mov/mpeg4) and simultaneously presented in the classroom using the resources that are relevant.

Reference parameters:
The essay must be delivered in digital format:

theoretical: pdf;
audiovisual: mpeg 4/avi;
other formats must be discussed in advance with the teacher;


Limits:

Theoretical: 3000 minimum words

Audiovisual: up to 20 min maximum

Calculation formula of final grade

 




Attendance and participation 40%


Thematic presentation in class 20%
Written or theoretical-practical essay 40%




Observations

Additional bibliography will be provided according to the interests and motivations of each student.
