This Course Unit will be articulated with Design II as a projectual and study complement without compromising their individual contents and objectives. To this end the course is divided into three parts in which two of them contemplate a practical work developed by the students a) and c):
a) TERRITORY (precedes the exercise of the UC of Design II - Territory and Identity).
a1) To introduce students to the strategic design of tools for interacting with territory, regions, communities and people;
a2) To develop skills for cultural and territorial communication and research: to master the diversity of language (verbal and non-verbal) and to use graphics as a form of communication;
a3) To explore communication tools to translate emotions, identity and the symbolic dimension of objects and cultures.
b) TRIDIMENSIONAL OBJECTS AND SPACES (based on an exercise already completed during the Design II - Identity and History of Design exercise)
b1) To understand three-dimensional space by establishing a relationship between contents, supports (physical and digital) and users;
b2) Learn to contextualize the (three-dimensional) objects and materials in the historical cultural context - relating with the selected authors in Design II;
b3) Be able to identify materials, media and techniques of three-dimensional production with critical skills;
c) PAPER VOLUMETRIES (PACKAGING)
c1) Design small scale objects through three-dimensional tools, maquetization and prototyping;
c2) Techniques of folding and three-dimensional manipulation of a two-dimensional support;
c3) Three-dimensional representation strategies
At the end of the semester, students must demonstrate competences of social and communicational interaction with a community (or region, or cultural project, etc.) selected by themselves, using the strategies and methodologies discussed in class. They must not only be able to prove strategic capacities in their approach to the Territory and People, but also in the documentation, selection and creation of graphic contents that allow a better approach, relationship and empathy with the stakeholders and information providers for the future project(s).
They should also be able to represent a space and/or three-dimensional objects and ephemeral supports, showing a critical and active attitude both in the conceptual approach and in the strategic selection of physical elements, selection of materials and construction processes.
This is a course unit with a theoretical and practical component. To the students is proposed two exercises, whose development is theoretically supported by the following topics:
1st part
2nd part
Exposure, analysis, and discussion of relevant materials of theoretical and practical nature in order to institute a permanent discussion forum and the establishment of transversal information flows within the working group.
According to the syllabus and the development of the proposals, it may be necessary that some classes take place outdoors - these moments always occur with advance notice to the students and to Academic Services.
The classroom will be organized according to a laboratorial structure for the development of design projects. This way, it will be put into practice the idea of laboratory as a place for experimentation, operation and transformation, where students, individually and collectively, will develop two projects of practical and theoretical-practical nature aiming to implement the scientific contents and consolidate technical skills.
In some specific topics of the Curricular Unit program, experts will be invited to give lectures and/or interact with students about the exercises in course.
