Objectives

To understand and act in the boundaries between the designer action and the editor action, in a personal project development context.

To think on project methodologies through their graphic aspects and in an edition context.

To master the analogic skills in order to produce visual communication artifacts and simoultaneously the digital applications in order to develop graphic projects.

To set and draw strategies for action with the two aspects of the project.

To define research territories that allow to interpret the real through design, contributing to the designer's action reinforcement of the analitic capacity and the social responsability endorsed by the activity.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student will be prepared and qualified to produce a programme of communication, in its editorial and graphic aspects. These will be expressed in communication artifacts, supported in narratives and reasonings that explain both the theoretical and the practical action.

Working method

Presencial

Program

The programme is developed in two separate but complementary fronts, that justify the present title of the master programme: the editorial project and the graphic design project. The main goal is to provide the student with the knowledge and mastery of both aspects. The connection to the real world will be very important, as well as the confrontation and integration with other scientific areas, in order to allow the student to have a central role in the action performed as a designer, that will take to knowledge production in her specific area.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In a first take, having organical structures of the editorial universe and panorama as background, the student will be invited to elaborate an editorial structure to her project.

The second take is developed from the definition, of the taxonomical domain, and the construction of different communication artifacts, printed and/or digital, in order to master its constructive problematization.

Beside the personal project, the student is presented with other areas of knowledge, from literature to phisics, from cuisine to music, so that both a paralelism and a capacity of integration among those areas can be settled to develop Design projects.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 10,00
Trabalho de campo 90,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 120,00
Total: 120,00

Eligibility for exams

Resolution, presentation and positive evaluation of three defined projects, and attendance to the programmed sessions.

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment will be continuous. Attendance to all classes will always be an evaluation factor, since it is mandatory. The final evaluation is a result of the final average of the intermediate evaluations and the percentage of the attended classes.

Examinations or Special Assignments

1. Personal Project.

Research territory where the student build, questions and explores the public sphere universe, submitting that world to analysis, through design, in a way that the responses result preferably of the practice and thought that are part of the methodologies applied to the Design project, face to face with the areas of personal interest of the students.

Observations

The assessment of each project occurs in three levels (artifact/idea/reasoning).

1. qualitity of the execution of the artifact. Mastery and fitness of the supports, use of typography, control and treatment of images.

2. suitabilty and relevance of the concept that motivates the project.

3. reasoning and presentation skills to show and explain the project.

The presentation of the projects cannot be repeated, since it demands defined dates and the presence of all the students. Yet, the projects can always be improved in their formal component, throughout the year and until the final assessement.
