Finished her training at the Lisbon’s Ar.Co School of Visual Arts (Photography Dept.) in 1995 and in 1998 at the Slade School of Fine Art (Master in Fine Art, Media Dept.), being currently a student at the Doctorate Programme in Contemporary Art at Coimbra University, School of the Arts. Rita Castro Neves has been exhibiting regularly in both institutional spaces (Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves, Porto, Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, Brazil, Spike Island, Bristol, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, I.C.A., London, Korjaamo Gallery, Helsinki, Image Museum, Braga, Nogueira da Silva Museum, Braga, Neo-Realism Museum, Vila Franca de Xira, Fábrica Asa, Guimarães European Capital Culture) and alternative spaces (rented flat, primary school, public toilet, record shop...).
Since 2015 Rita develop sa collaboration with artist and architect Daniel Moreira. With
Laking, produced in 2015 following an invitation by the Finish art space Oksasenkatu 11, the duo started a long project on the representation of landscape, using drawing, photography and video – in installation, to think about artistic collaboration, different techniques and artistic cultures, territory, scale and journey.
Solo shows include Laking and seaing at Museu da Imagem at the Encontros da Imagem Braga Photo Festival (Braga, 2017), Ermida at Santa Luzia small church in Alvito (June 2019) and Órbitas at the Portuguese Consulate of São Paulo (with Guto Lacaz, curated by Isabella Lenzi, 2019). Group exhibitions include Without Imago Mundi, a Random Detour Instead at the Porto Planetarium (curated by Eduarda Neves, 2018), Jardim Atlântico at Colégio das Artes (Coimbra, 2017) and at Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil, 2018, supported by Shuttle Porto City Council Programme Plaka) and Ci.CLO Bienal’19 de Fotografia do Porto (curated by Virgílio Ferreira, Palácio de Cristal Gardens, Porto 2019). In 2022 the duo will have an exhibition at Appleton Square, Lisbon.
Artistic residencies have been important in the development of the duo’s work, including the Paulo Reis Residency at Ateliê Fidalga in São Paulo (Sandra Cinto and Albano Afonso, August 2017), at the Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre of Maputo, Mozambique (July 2018), ), at Inter.Meada in Alvito (may 2018), at Montanha Mágica/UBI, Serra da Estrela (june 2018), at the Paranapiacaba Photo Festival (Brazil, August 2019) and at Luz Linar (Feital, 2019-20). In October 2017 they travelled through Japan in a study trip with a Fundação Oriente Grant.
Rita develops curatorial projects alone and in collaboration, mainly in the field of Live Art, including Amorph!98 International Performance Festival in Helsinki, and from 2006 to 2012 co-programmed the yearly international event Trama Festival of Performative Events, with the Serralves Foundation in Porto. Currently is a teacher at the School of Fine Arts, University of Porto. From 2005 till 2008 was the Educational Coordinator of the Photography Course at the Portuguese Institute for Photography in Porto. Rita Castro Neves is a member of i2ADS the Research Institute in Art, Design and Society, School of Fine Arts, University of Porto. Rita created and coordinates the group Symptom. Performance. Research. Experimentation.
