Design of Health Technologies

The postgraduate course is part of the Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR) within the scope of "Impulse Adults", responding to its strategic objectives insofar as, responding to a need exposed by Fraunhofer-AICOS to the University of Porto, it proposes to increase skills ("Upskills") of employees of entities that collaborate with this institute, in the areas of 'Human-Centred Design' and 'Human-Computer Interaction' oriented to the development of products in the context of human health and well-being.

This postgraduate course, in addition to FBAUP's partner OUs (FEUP and FMUP), assumes institutional partnerships such as UPTEC and Fraunhofer-AICOS. The latter, in addition to participating in the training component related to User Research, formally expressed interest in “(...) identify, among Fraunhofer Portugal's industry partners that work in the health area, the most suitable ones to be involved in training”, considering that “(...) the specialization course in Health Technology Design responds to a clear need for training and skills creation, as well as a need highlighted by the industry related to the development of products and services for health”. Finally, it is also identified by the institute that “(...) the program is strongly aligned with the work and mission of Fraunhofer Portugal, to develop research with practical applicability for economic development and the improvement of people's lives”.

Objectives

  • Provide students with solid training in Design principles for interactive media in Human-Centered Design methodologies applied to mHealth and eHealth;
  • Knowing human factors, their relationships and impacts on the body's homeostasis, health and well-being associated with the 'User Experience': Cognition; Memory; Emotion; Feeling; Motricity;
  • Know and apply 'User Research' methods in the context of health;
  • Provide students with basic training on the principles and requirements of privacy, cybersecurity and current legislation and how these affect the development, design, interaction and integration of technology centered on health technology users;
  • Know the context of 'serious games' applied to the health area. Its mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics;
  • Know and analyze case studies in a clinical context in Human-Computer Interaction;
  • Know and implement prototyping and evaluation methodologies in the development of clinical technologies.

Professional Abilities

  • Identify and understand the different project and team management methodologies for interactive media;
  • Identify and understand the privacy and security requirements, as well as the regulations, which are related to the creation and development of "User Interfaces" and the processing of personal and health data;
  • Knowing design and prototyping tools, implementing methods for defining system/product requirements and user-centered design;
  • Know, implement and evaluate different typologies and prototyping phases, using rapid prototyping tools and development of applications and games, including the use of appropriate programming languages ​​and paradigms;
  • Know and know how to apply principles of interaction design and game design to interactive media in the context of health and well-being.
