Objectives

The aim of the course is to create study moments conducive to the development of a practice of research and critical thinking around projects of equipments of particular complexity in what concernes with its program and"> the architectural, structural and constructive solutions that determine it.
">The course is based on the centrality of Drawing as an 'instrument of thought' and the construction of an 'intelligent memory', which are considered essential for the development and enrichment of an 'intelligent and instinctive intuition' that we consider to be essential to the architectural practice.
Alexandre Alves Costa summed up the above. About the pedagogical practice at Porto School, he states that "drawing has very quickly demonstrated its usefulness in various fields of architecture learning, first of all in the research of its essence, that of the nature of space, through an analytical process of observation of cases, aiming at composition, proportion, scale, volumetry, structure, textural values, relations with context and even some intangible factors such as light or color. "

Learning outcomes and competences

The exploration of a cross between an expository teaching method and the development of a research practice, which starts from the drawing as a privileged instrument of thought, in the specific disciplinary field of architecture, aims at different categories of objectives and results.

Thus, at the level of teaching and learning is intended:
i. to provide information on a significant set of architectural works, creating a space for the transmission, acquisition and expansion of knowledge, around the architectural production of public equipments, which is particularly relevant and useful in the context of the work developed by the students in the design studio, and the courses of Construction and Structural Systems of the 4th year of MIArq, insofar as it is considered that this courset, directly and indirectly, contributes to the enrichment of the creative and design process;
ii. to foster a practice and culture of study, research and critical thinking in students;
iii. to promote moments of approximation, contact and global comprehension - between form, structure and construction - of each of the buildings presented in each class, creating an opportunity for students to become more aware of the complexity of levels that exist in the design and construction processes of public equipment, namely at the level of programmatic questions and technical requirements - structural and constructive - and regulations, which necessarily imply the integration and coordination of different disciplinary knowledge.

Program

According to the school calendar, a total of 13 classes are expected. After a first class in which the course will be presented - program, mode of operation and method of evaluation - and in which the importance of the Drawing as an instrument of thought and construction of an intelligent memory, will be highlighted, are followed 12 classes of presentation of a program, building and author, considered exemplary, each with a duration of 1h30 theoretical-practical. In due course, teachers and archiects, authors of the buildings - equipment - considered exemplary and particularly relevant within the scope of the course's contents will be invited, who will share the teaching time, presenting their vision about a certain building proposed and others the project that they conceived.

Comments from the literature

In each class it will be provided specific bibliography supporting the program, author and building addressed.

Teaching methods and learning activities

">The course unit takes place in the classroom during the first semester of the academic year, combining 4th and 5th grade students of the MIArq.
From an array of theoretical-practical classes it is intended to provide a teaching method and to develop a set of learning activities that cross an expository teaching with the exploration of a research practice through design and around case studies considered exemplary.
Throughout each of the 12 classes, the students prepare a written and drawn synthesis of the contents presented, obligatorily on paper and A4 format, which expresses their individual process of analysis and research and the critical interpretation and reflection they produce around each program, author and building addressed.
In the context of the programatic contents of the course, at the end of the 7th class, students are invited to define the program, author and building they choose to select for the practical work, which must be delivered until the last class of the course.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 30,00
Trabalho de campo 20,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 30,00
Frequência das aulas 21,00
Trabalho de campo 10,00
Trabalho de investigação 20,00
Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

In accordance with the applicable legislation, attendance at at least 75% of the contact times is considered a prerequisite for attendance. The achievement of frequency also requires the delivery of the practical work done in each class and the practical work done on building selected by the student.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation
The assessment of knowledge is distributed in the semester and, based on a face-to-face basis, is based on the qualitative assessment of the work done and delivered by the student in each class and the practical work done on a student's selected building.

Classification
The classification results from the weighting of the participation, the total of the work accomplished and delivered in each class and the practical work done on a selected building by the student and is translated quantitatively in a scale of 0 to 20 values, in accordance with the regulations applicable to UP and FAUP.

Formula of calculation of the final classification
The final classification is calculated by summing the scores obtained by applying the weighting factors to each of the evaluation components: attendance (30%); average of practical work done in class (50%); and practical work on a building selected by the student (20%).

CF = ( 30% x PP ) + ( 50% x TPA ) + ( 20% x TPE )

CF – Final Classification

PP – Attendance

TPA – Practical work done in class

TPE – Practical Work on Building selected by the student

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In accordance with applicable legislation.

Classification improvement

In accordance with applicable legislation.

Observations

Numerus clausus
Course with a maximum of 15 students. Students will be selected through the grade obtained by the average grades in Design Studio and Drawing that the student has obtained approval until the date of application for the course, namely Project 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and Drawing 1 and 2.

According to the devellopment of COVID-19 pandemy, and depending on the dispostions that may be demanded by the Portuguese Health Authorities, changes may occur in face-to-face classes regime.
