Objectives

"Construction of Wooden Architecture" introduces fundamental principles about materials, particularly on wood, taking into account its properties and the industrial processes associated with its transformation.

When reflecting on the topics covered in the course, it is expected that the student acquire tools that allow him, during his future practice as an architect, establish an increasingly adjusted relationship between form and construction, in the sense of an architectural production sensitive to place, circumstance and context.

Learning outcomes and competences

1. understand the use of wood in different contexts and circumstances, through the understanding of design strategies and construction techniques;
2. acquire critical capacity to evaluate, in design practice and in constructive action, the technical variables of wood when used in construction systems and processes.

Program

By understanding the material, its origin and its transformation capability, the main goal is give information about the material potential in the architecture construction. Than, the design strategies and construction techniques used regarding specific aspects to wood architecture will be analyzed, both in their general logic and in the wisdom of detail, having as main basis the relationship between form and construction.

Theoretical classes promote the crossing of the following themes:
1. Forest management, wood production and wood construction, as factors to promote the balanced development of the planet.
2. Wood as a building material: the technical properties of wood and the evolution of its transformation.
3. Of vernacular architecture, in space and time.
4. Urban architecture: main advantages.
5. Contemporary development of the use of wood in the construction of architecture.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical time is divided into five distinct moments:

1. Through the exhibition of scientific material about the material, an attempt is made to read a set of significant works in the scope of architecture, for systematize constructive solutions in their relationship with the architectural form.
2. From the critical analysis of the wood architecture, it is intended that the student investigates and develops a theoretical and practical work, using drawing and writing.
3. In the middle of the semester, the student has to expose individual work.
4. In the fourth moment, different guests, connected to the use of wood in their professional work, will share their experience.
5. Finally, it is scheduled a visit to an industrial material processing unit.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 40,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 60,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 18,00
Trabalho de investigação 34,00
Elaboração de projeto 48,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

75% recorded attendance, participation in classes and positive rating in the evaluation of the work done.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification of the student results from the weighted sum of the individual classification of the final work, attendance and participation in classes.

Observations

According to the devellopment of COVID-19 pandemy, and depending on the dispostions that may be demanded by the Portuguese Health Authorities, changes may occur in face-to-face classes regime.
