Objectives

Objectives, Competences and Learning results.
To develop drawing praxis – the singularity of its expression and individual adequateness
(manners, techniques and systems of representation) – in such a way that it favours a free and effective construction of images closely related to architectural project.

Learning outcomes and competences

Domain, through freehand drawing, of graphic and plastic representations of forms, volumes and spaces. Working knowledge of the means and processes of representation. Domain, methodological and critical, of the diferent systems of representation and figuration in arquitecture drawing: measurement, scale, composition and expression. Ability to record, analysis, design and communication of architecture. Skills in representation and design of architecture imagery. Ability to develop, critically, autonomous processes or personal research and design.

Program

Program
The themes and phasing of the work units' program follow four stages. The first three focus on the production, analysis and study of the complementary relationships between drawing and project, according to a successively deeper approach to drawing from reality, from drawings, from the imagined and for architectural conception. The fourth stage focus in the illustration, composition and communication of a given project.
Themes and study subjects:

1) Analyzing the real. Representation and figuration of a given location. Representational systems and the images of architectural conception. Field, subject and representation. Technical instruments and visual thinking. Developing attitudes and strategies about the images to be made. Compositive and expressive nature of images. Idea of analysis and mapping of a place. Study of existing relationships between drawing modes and different strategies to build images.

2) Drawing from drawings. Too see, compare and study pattern phenomena and the copy of images within the realm of drawing. Studying the production and meaning of pictures, the history and culture of Architectural drawing.

3) Drawing from the imagination. Developing the ability to make and build drawing processes leading to a picture that doesn't immediately arise from a perception of the real world. Elaborating processes and attitudes, mental and instrumental, for the concept of images belonging to the project. The use of perspective. Likelihood and virtuality of images. Project and illustration processes.

4) Drawing to communicate. Communication, economy and efficacy; composition and assemblage. Expressive intent and objective demand in architectural drawing. Final composition processes of the image as a means of formal and expressive communication in a project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methods:
The program will be developed according to whether the class is practical or theoretical. Theoretical sessions will context subjects, themes, examples and theoretical grounds of the practical drawing exercises performed at each work or study level.
Worksheets will define the theoretical and practical contextualizing of each stage, as well as the drawing's scheduling, evaluation and review parameters. These exercises aim to be didactic, and individual and collective debate is thus promoted. Constant teacher/student interaction is also promoted, both resulting of the interaction of knowledge and expectations, questions and answers. Briefings and evaluation sessions are a fundamental part of the process as a whole.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Frequência das aulas 0,00
Total: 0,00

Eligibility for exams

To obtain the frequency is necessary to ensure attendance of at least 75% of the classes provided.

Calculation formula of final grade

At the end of each phase, the evaluation will be the result of the developments of students' responses compared with reference parameters previously outlined in worksheets.

It is mandatory to submit a sketch book (daily chart) at which it will comply with the development of free and specific exercises. The sketchbook makes up 25% of the total rating for each phase.

The lack of students in the ratings, if not properly justified, implies a negative weighting for classification.
Rating calculation assumes the progression of the demands of exercise and the time perspective and synthesis of learning. The final grade, attendance and considered the overall utilization of the student, will be the weighted average of the three classifications provided for the academic year (25% +25% + 50%).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In accordance with applicable law.
