Objectives

1. Promote, experiment and develop theoretical and practical knowledge of BIM (building information modeling) methodology comprising the basic concepts during Architectural Project development as a process for innovation, research, management and architecture construction.

2. Promoting research on Architecture through project development simulating a real context of multidisciplinary and collaborative practice.

3. Collecting knowledge about BIM methodology application in international context in the vast AEC fields (architecture, engineering and construction) analyzing business context experiences and case studies and assessing advantages and disadvantages of applying the methodology in the production of an architectural idea.

4. In this course, the student should be able to use the available tools (individual selection of software and research methods) in order to apply BIM methodology in the development of a practical project developed by the student and an existing building case study.

Learning outcomes and competences

The expected results based on the program and defined set of goals will enable the student to acquire technical skills and scientific competences understanding concepts of Project and Construction fields as well as acquire the capacity of interaction, production and application of BIM tools and methodology by conducting a collaborative project. To that extent the student will develop skills in: (i) the domain of building virtual 3D, 4D and 5D models, (ii) architecture, design and engineering project and simulation processes, (iii) acquisition of interdisciplinary coordination concepts, LODs (iv) production of design and construction documents from BIM models

Program

The subject of this course includes the study and exploration of Project Architecture and Construction fields, based on the Project applied BIM methodology, held by several teachers and BIM experts presentations who will support this course. The specific program of this curricular unit will address the following matters:

1. BIM, a new approach to the project. A working methodology. Collaborative working tools.

2. BIM and architecture, a paradigm shift.

3. Concept of interoperability of BIM platform, relationships maps and information transmission.

4. Families and parameterization. Creating communication models. The concept LOD.

5. BIM and the different stakeholders in the Project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methods develop theoretical and practical nature of the discipline by conducting theoretical presentation of themes and disciplinary concepts held by teachers, as well as students´ works presentations, compared evaluation and results´ reports of the assessment during group class. Practical classroom will be held with lectures and seminars with various external experts whose knowledge and experience will enable the student to enlarge the scientific content within Project and Architecture area of knowledge

Observations

The practical work focus on architectural projects already built.
In order to establish links between the educational objectives of the discipline and the interest in fostering applied in architecture and based on the research work that CIAMH - Center for Innovation in Architecture and Ways of Living- CEAU-FAUP has been doing in this area of development of BIM, all models should be possible to integrate the MUDA project research towards the creation of a Museum of Digital Architecture in FAUP.
