Objectives

Knowledge of the main sociological and anthropological paradigms for the study of spatial questions; understanding of the frames of strcutural relation between spatial morphology and socio-cultural morphology; knowledge of the main implications of these relations in the study of portuguese society.

Learning outcomes and competences

Understanding of the main anthropological and sociological theories about the relations bewteen society and space. Understading of the main coordinates of these relation in portuguese society.

    1. Science and social sciences. The place of anthropology and sociology. 1.1. The emergence of anthropology and sociology. 1.2. Concepts and methods.
    2. Socio-anthropological paradigms in the analysis of space. 2.1. The urban question and the emergence of the socio-anthropological thought about space and territory. 2.2. Space in the classic authors of social science. 2.3. The Chicago school. 
2.4. An autonomous perspective about space: Lefebvre, Castells, Ledrut, Rémy and Voyé; Bourdieu and the analysis of the relations between social space and physical space; 2.5. New trends in the study of society and space.
    3. Rural contexts, cities, industrialization and urbanization. Theories and studies about the production and use of public, semipublic and private spaces. 3.1. Rural contexts and the contradictions of urbanization. 3.2. Industrialization and urbanization. 3.3. Mobility and urbanized cities. 3.4. Power, inequality and the (des)organization of the city. 3.5. Social inequality and culture in the city. 3.6. Old and new challenges for the study of the relations between social morphology and spaces
