Objectives

The UC has the following objectives: to make the students aware of the need of preservation and rehabilitation of the built heritage, to alert them for the most current causes of building pathologies associated with incorrect design and construction deficiencies and to provide them  with the knowledge that will allow them to recognize the most important building pathologies, determine their possible causes and to define the corresponding rehabilitation solution.

Learning outcomes and competences

Analysis and critical capacities, as well as fully understanding of the themes addressed;

Consciousness of the implication of the decisions at the design stage in the durability of the buildings;

Time management, interaction in group work and definition of orientation in research;

Basilar knowledge that will permit, in the future, to dialog with the different intervenient entities in the project design, construction, rehabilitation or preservation of buildings.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

For national students, the ranking criterion (S) will take into account the ratings of the Construction UC (C), the overall mean (M) and the weighted number of ECTS already concluded with the following formula:

S = ECTS/20 + M + (C1 + C2 + C3)/3 (for not yet approved UC, the classification is considered 0)

For Erasmus students, the criterion for the ranking will only consider the most advanced complete year at the school of origin.

1. Building Pathologies

Methodologies: Analysis, diagnosis and interventions. Basic vocabulary

Auxiliary means of diagnosis

Identification of their cause and the corresponding symptoms, and corrective forms 

2. Building rehabilitation: framework

Evolution of the concepts related to the intervention in the built heritage: Monuments and common buildings. 

Historical perspective. Vocabulary definition

Theoretical discourse and the International Charts.

Methodologies of analyses, diagnose and intervention. 

Quality and sustainability issues

Case study.

3. Building Elements Rehabilitation: characterization, diagnosis, and intervention techniques.

Structural elements: foundations, vertical and horizontal structures. Masonry, wood, steel and concrete structures.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching method is based on a link between the theoretical classes, expanding on various topics, and practical classes, that can be converted to tutorial guidance time to practical work orientation. This work is developed in a group, directs the student to study specific aspects of the program, and is materialized in a preliminary study for the building intervention. The development and presentation of this assessment, together with criteria for attendance and participation, are the elements of the UC evaluation.

The presentation of contents in the theoretical classes preferably uses specific cases of buildings and projects, always looking to make connections with content already taught in other courses. Whenever possible complement the lectures with visits to buildings, testing laboratories, documentation archives, or the invitation of design teams for the sharing of their experience. 

 In the end of the semester the different projects should be available to all students at the e-learning platform. 

All the support to the disciple, from the summaries, lecture notes, tutorial orientation to the contact with the lecturers could be done through the e-learning service of IRIC (http://elearning.up.pt) in the corresponding area of the discipline.

Eligibility for exams

Obtain frequency any the student regularly inscribed that do not exceed the maximum allowable absences - 25% of teaching weeks (RGACMIAF - Art 9, No. 6);

Calculation formula of final grade

The final mark will be a weighted sum of the work project evaluation, of its public presentation and of the evaluation made trough the length of the term, including intermediate evaluations and assiduity criteria. The weights to be considered for each of the referred terms of that sum are 60%, 15% e 25%, respectively. A mark equal or superior to 9.5 is required for Approval.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Each work project will be carried by a group of students. Milestones and intermediate evaluations through the length of the term may be required. The work project must be presented in a document form as well as in a public session. The time for this oral presentation will be previously defined and will be equally divided by all member of the work group

Observations

All the evaluation marks will be expressed in a 0 to 20 scale.
All documents presented for evaluation should be excusive work of their legitimate authors.
