Objectives
The optional curricular unit "Design and Form of the Public Space in the Contemporary City" intends to approach the public space as a fundamental component in the different times of the city's history, taking into account its multiple dimensions and seeking to understand, interconnect the designs and the past and gifts from public space. It is intended to promote a broad reflection on the contemporary condition of the public space project, as well as the strategies and design tools that the architect has at his disposal to intervene and build the contemporary city.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is intended that the student recognize and be able to understand and characterize the contemporary urban condition in which the public space project operates. It is also intended that the student be able to understand, critically and supported in the historical knowledge of models and paradigms of intervention in the city, the themes and problems that are posed today to its materialization.
In addition, it is intended that the student be able to:
a) to understand and characterize the complexity and diversity of meanings that the notion of public space contains, as well as the main paradigm changes that implied changes in historical types and consequently in the city's own form;
b) characterize the different perspectives (concepts, authors, processes) that legitimize and organize from a theoretical point of view the different meanings and materializations of the contemporary public space, clearly distinguishing the role and the urbanistic vocation that historically the public space has assumed;
c) explore and select methods and tools for analysis and description appropriate to the study of public space;
d) to select, analyze and critically describe case studies, namely the strategies and project methodologies adopted, or regarding formal solutions, constructive, typological, and programmatic options.

Teaching methods and learning activities
It is intended that the teaching methods adopted be appropriate to the theoretical and practical nature of the curricular unit. Predominantly there will be sessions of exposition of the theoretic contents enunciated in the program, followed by debate centered on the matter exposed, or in articles previously made available by the teacher, or in reference works. Study visits will be carried out as a complement to the moments of exhibition and debate.
