Objectives

Object:
Transformation processes in the scientific-artistic higher education-Porto/Portugal: 1950/2016.

Framing/objectives:
This course of the MIARQ arises from the need to deepen a field of theoretical reflection on the binomial art/science in the higher level teaching/learning equation in Portugal.

Considering the research processes developed by its teachers in this field of studies wich lead to their PhD thesis and in the context of a multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary project established between the Faculties of Architecture, Fine Arts and Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, it aims to broaden the scientific knowledge produced and, combining it with the pedagogical practices and didactics proper of a second cycle of studies, to be an integrated line of interdisciplinary studies.

Through an objective need to contribute to the fixation of collective memory, regarding at the generation and consolidation of the "School of Porto" and all the other institutions formed from it, considering national and international contexts, their intersections and interferences and those that, especially after the implementation of the "Reforma de 1957", have been creating different forms of affirmation in academia and in society, in the academic, professional, social and political spheres, revisiting the passed to understand the questions of contemporaneity, it's pretended to enlarge it by the information and interpretation of the studies that may result from the curricular work.

Observing the current durricular offer (FAUP and UP) and the possible benefits of mixing students from different scientific areas to establish specific knowledge in an interdisciplinary way, it's intended to enrich their curricula through specialized studies in the last years of the master; eventually guide them in possible research paths in order to support their thesis processes or final project; open perspectives in the area of Architecture and its transversals with other areas, in order to motivate them to attend to third-cycle courses or to follow a research career.

Finally, it is the aim of this UC to contribute to the understanding of the contemporary situation regarding at the study, understanding and interpretation of the processes of transformation in the scientific-artistic higher education in Portugal (1950/2016).

Learning outcomes and competences

To deepen the field stated before, considering the binomial assumed in the context of the programme, two categories of objectives/results are pointed out in the following strands – teaching and learning:

Teaching
-Provide basic information, relevant to the acquisition and expansion of knowledge;
-Create spaces for reflection and debate on the issues in question;
-Provide platforms for sharing and disseminating knowledge seized and produced within the framework of this course;
-Fostering the development of students autonomy face to different levels of intellectual complexity.

Learning
-Work with multiple sources of information considering its acquisition, interpretation and intellectual intersection;
-Develop individual and collective study and work practices;
-Produce oral and written documents of analysis and synthesis capable of supporting arguments on general and specific subjects of the disciplinary area and related areas;
-Learn to work with the disciplinary transversals and their intersections of content, in order to enrich and broaden the knowledge;
-Build critical postures when facing complex problems;
-Formulate original thinking on issues of the specific and related areas, in the perspective of the understanding of contemporaneity.

Program

The program is based on the fundamental axes named infra. Its development will be detailed further in the proper platform of SIGARRA.

Based on a double perspective (conceptual and chronological), they are summed up according to the following moments:
1. Introduction;
2. Development;
3. Conclusion,

according to the axes:
1. Generation;
2. Consolidation;
3. Affirmation,

in the chronological periods of:
1.1950/1957;
2.1957/1962;
3.1962/1969/1974;
4.1974/1979;
5.1979/1992;
6.1992/2006;
7.2006/2016,

referred to relevant paradigm shift milestones in subjects under study, reflecting chronologically and thematically the period between the "Reforma de '57" and the process of adequacy to the Bologna Declaration:
1. Equation of the reform of the fine arts schools;
2. Application of the "Reforma de '57";
3. Consolidation of the experienced models;
4. Restructuring and division of the schools of artistic education;
5. Complete integration in the university;
6. Institutional affirmation/national and international affirmation;
7. Change of the teaching/learning paradigm/adequacy to guardianship political guidelines,

observing multiple changes in the production processes related to the professional context and their conections to pedagogical and didactic practices considering:
1. master/apprentice;
2. teacher/student;
3. idea/process/project/work;
4. subject area (course)/society,

and the transformations thought and creation processes concerning:
1. Analogical;
2. Digital.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course is organized to take place in the period of a school semester – the 1st (conjugating students of the 4th and 5th years of the MIARQ and, by selecting and pondering academic curricula, the holders of equivalent degree from other courses of the UP, mainly from FBAUP and FPCEUP). The theoretical-practical matrix classes will provide students with two particular moments – expository and reflection/critique – combining methods of direct and indirect teaching, and the cross-formulations between expository teaching and learning through case studies, research and problem-based.

During the semester, students are invited to aim a specific study subject in the context of the course program, to synthesize it in an abstract, to develop it in an essay and to present it in an oral communication. In summary, the course combines exposure (normal or open class) with individual and collective exploration/critique. In the subsequent semesters, extracurricular activities are carried out to promote intersections with other disciplinary areas of the university and society. It's also expected that, the students follow-up proceeds after the curricular term to help them (if they choose so) in their final work to get the integrated master's degree. As an extracurricular event it's expected to happen an annual colloquium aimed to broadcast the communications and essays produced by the students during the curricular period and to enlarge and spread the field of knowledge in these matters.

Eligibility for exams

Prerequisite:
In accordance with the applicable legislation, the frequency is considered as a prerequisite for attendance at, at least, 75% of the classes.

Evaluation:
The evaluation is distributed without final examination. Based on a face-to-face basis, it has, as special moments, the qualitative appreciation of a summary, an article and its written and oral communication.

Classification:
The classification results from the weighting of the three special evaluation moments, in a range of 0 up to 20 values, regarding at the regulations applicable to UP and FAUP, respecting the qualitative parameters there established.

Calculation formula of final grade

FC = (25% x A) + (50% x E) + (25% x C)

FC – Final classification    A - Abstract    E – Essay    C – Communication
